Jordan offer rejected

Daily Echo Article - 28th November 2007

EASTLEIGH have had an offer rejected for Havant & Waterlooville skipper and central defender Tom Jordan, writes WENDY GEE.

Director of football David Malone confirmed the Spitfires had made "quite a substantial offer" to their Blue Square South rivals, but it was turned down by his opposite number Derek Pope at Westleigh Park.

Given that Eastleigh have already wooed away the Hawks' manager Ian Baird this season, Malone was not surprised by the Hawks' response.

"If I was in their position I would probably have done the same," he admitted. "For one thing Tom is a decent player and, for another, I doubt they would want to do anything to help Eastleigh.

"Popey's actual response to me was that Tom Jordan is not for sale, but they'd consider a straight swap for Andy Forbes and Luke Byles!"

Bristol-based Jordan, a commanding 6ft 5in centre-back, joined Havant at the start of 2004/5 and was made club captain the following season. He has made 165 appearances for the Hawks.

The son of former Saints frontman and current Pompey coach, Joe, he started his career with Bristol City's youth side before moving to Southend United, Tamworth and Forest Green Rovers. He has also played semi-professionally for England.

Shaun Gale, who succeeded Baird at the Havant & Waterlooville helm, said: "As far as I am aware, Tom is going nowhere. Why would I want to sell a player who has been magnificent for us?"

That, however, is unlikely to deter Eastleigh, who have recently lost the services of Rob Marshall, due to work commitments, and have fellow defenders Karim El Salahi, Chris Collins and Andy Harris struggling with injury.

They have brought in Warren Goodhind for a month from Ebbsfleet United, but he twisted his ankle on his debut.

"We're looking to bring in a couple of quality players," said Malone. "Havant have rejected our first bid for Tom Jordan and I think it might be a long-term struggle now."

Jordan is suspended this Saturday when Hawks travel to Notts County in the FA Cup second round. He misses the biggest game in the club's history after picking up a fifth yellow card.

Watts out for the season

Daily Echo Article - 27th November

THE injury news just keeps getting grimmer for Blue Square South outfit Eastleigh.

The latest bombshell dropped on Ian Baird's side is that frontman Steve Watts has been ruled out for the rest of the season with knee damage.

It's been one problem after another for the former Leyton Orient striker. Having had a lengthy spell out following a cartilage operation in August, he had to have a cyst removed from behind the same knee.

He marked his comeback by going on as a substitute and scoring against Forest Green Rovers in the FA Cup late last month but has been struggling on the sidelines ever since.

"No one's been able to diagnose what's wrong with the knee, but it turns out I've got a hole in it and I've got to have microfracture surgery in two weeks' time," he revealed.

Such surgery helps restore knee cartilage by creating tiny fractures in the adjacent bones, causing new cartilage to develop.

"I'm devastated," said Watts, who joined Eastleigh from Bromley in January this year and travels down from his home in Peckham, South London.

He is only under contract until the end of this season, but said: "I love it at Eastleigh and I can't wait to try and get back into the squad next season."

With fellow frontman Paul Sales also out long-term with a hernia, the Spitfires are today due to complete the signing of striker/attacking midfielder Ashan Holgate from Weston-Super-Mare pending a medical.

Having had their fingers burned two summers ago when they signed Justin Bennett from Andover only to lose him for the entire season with knee trouble, Eastleigh are determined not to get caught out again.

"Every player we sign from now on is subject to a medical," confirmed boss Baird.

Towering centre-back Karim El Salahi is also back in the wars. Having bravely played on with a sore groin, the former Woking defender has now pulled his hamstring.

Eastleigh, meanwhile, have landed a chance to succeed where Baird's old club Havant & Waterlooville failed in the FA Trophy first round proper.

The Spitfires have been drawn at home to Blue Square South rivals Bognor Regis Town, who beat the Hawks 2-1 at Nyewood Lane on Saturday.

On paper, it is one of the better ties Eastleigh could have hoped for with the Rocks down in 19th in the league, but Baird is taking nothing for granted.

"It's a home draw, which is the most important thing, and it's a winnable game, but we know Bognor are very dangerous," he warned.

"Since Jack Pearce stepped down as manager their results seem to have picked up. We won't be taking them lightly whatsoever."

Spitfires progress in Trophy to maintain 100% Seagulls record

EASTLEIGH v WESTON-SUPER-MARE

SATURDAY 24th NOVEMBER 2007

FA Challenge Trophy - 3rd Qualifying Round

A depleted Eastleigh squad owing to several injuries, saw the Spitfires put in a strong performance to earn their third victory over the Seagulls this season and with it, a place in the next round of the FA Trophy.

17-year old goalkeeper Ross Kitteridge, who is on loan/work experience from Reading - was the man between the sticks today for his Eastleigh debut following James Pullen’s midweek ankle operation.

Meanwhile, Danny Smith came into the centre of defence as skipper, Fitzroy Simpson made his home debut starring in the centre of midfield alongside the equally brilliant Jamie Brown (back from suspension), who replaced David Hughes.

A bright start from the hosts saw Matt Hann extremely lively early on down the right, whilst Damian Scannell was at his best also with excellent running, skill and hold up play in attack.

Scannell created the first chance of the afternoon to build on excellent approach play, turning Andrew Robertson before chipping the ball into the centre for Forbes whose acrobatic effort flew wide of goal.

It took a combination of both Craig Rand and Robertson to deny the former Fisher Athletic man a moment later, as Scannell worked his way into the penalty area with ease before having his shot well charged down and deflected behind for a corner kick.

After a scuffle between Chris Piper and Aaron Wilson (the referee taking full control of the situation and showing no cards), Eastleigh produced their best move yet in the tenth minute.

Superb interplay from Ian Baird’s men saw the ball worked right from the back down the left hand side with Adam Everitt and Fitzroy Simpson. The attack continued with a delightful touch from Scannell for Anthony Riviere to produce the cross from the flank. Andy Forbes met the ball with a glancing header but was thwarted by a decent save from Ryan Northmere.

Lewis Powell had the first opportunity for the visitors with his turn and shot from the edge of the area to give the youngster Kitteridge his first touch of the afternoon.

Eastleigh’s Anthony Riviere then blazed over the top from his lovely dribble through the middle of the park before Weston-Super-Mare were rewarded a very soft free kick. Powell went down rather easily under a timely, Brown challenge but a foul was given all the same. It did not matter as the captain Craig Loxton fired hopelessly high and wide.

The deadlock was broken in the 23rd minute when FITZROY SIMPSON finished off from close range for his first Eastleigh goal. Chris Piper was instrumental in the goal, as was Scannell. The full back attacked his opponents high up the pitch before Scannell picked up on the loose ball to square and provide Simpson with the simplest of finishes from 6 yards.

A goal down, the Seagulls came close from Aaron Wilson’s left-footed volley on the half-hour that came close to creeping in at Kitteridge’s right-hand post. This coming after a further positive move from Eastleigh with Riviere and Everitt linking to win a free kick narrowly outside the penalty area, only for the ball to fly out of play from Piper’s delivery.

Ben Willshire, the Weston-Super-Mare left back, was given a torrid time having to cope with the electric, Matt Hann and the threatening, Andy Forbes to name just two. Two incidents in the same minute saw Willshire earn himself a yellow card as he simply failed to cope with the danger. First off going straight through Forbes with a late challenge, before hacking down Hann by the corner flag having been beaten for pace.

Eastleigh were still going strong and looking good for their 1-0 lead with ten minutes still to play in the first half. Andy Forbes rose high from Everitt’s excellent delivery from a corner on the right, though the Spitfires’ top marksman was unable to direct his header goalwards.

Ross Kitteridge, who had rarely been troubled in the Eastleigh goal the whole of the first half, was suddenly called upon with a testing header from Lewis Powell as Weston-Super-Mare sprung into life. Back-pedalling the rookie keeper pulled off a splendid save to palm the ball over the top. This save was not only out of the top-drawer but the timing could not have been better in keeping his side in front with minutes before the break.

Just when the visitors were on the up, the Spitfires struck again right on half time. A strong, downward header from Jamie Brown looked destined for goal from a corner kick, but was punched from the goal line in desperation from Northmere.

The ball fell only as far as Scannell and when his cross came back in the ball struck the arm of a yellow shirt and the penalty kick was given.

ANDY FORBES stepped up and made no mistake from 12 yards with a confident strike into the bottom left hand corner to stretch the advantage to two goals.

HALF TIME – Eastleigh 2-0 Weston-Super-Mare

Into the second half, the visitors began at a furious pace. PHILLIP HALL, who had been on the pitch a matter of seconds, made an immediate impact as he found the back of the net with an audacious lob from range that flew into the top corner of the net from a stunning, long range curling effort.

The ball was in the back of the net once more a minute later when Dean Grubb’s cross was bundled home. Eastleigh were handed a let-off as the offside flag ruled out what would have been a crushing blow for the hosts and an equaliser for the Seagull’s.

From this frightful awakening, the Spitfires responded magnificently to again take full command of the cup-tie.

Jamie Brown had a header well saved from an Everitt free kick before our battling midfielder was in the action once more with the next chance of the game.

Anthony Riviere played the ball into Brown who let fly with a stinging piledriver that Northmere could only parry before his defence came to his aid to clear for a corner.

No less than deserved, JAMIE BROWN headed home his second goal of the season from the resulting corner kick. Ironically his last goal came against Weston-Super-Mare in the 3-0 away win. Fitzroy Simpson’s floated ball to the far post was met by a brave header from Brown, which beat the keeper to put daylight between the two sides at 3-1.

Eastleigh in the ascendancy, saw a flurry of chances come there way. Firstly with Damian Scannell’s run and shot from range drifting an inch wide of the upright.

Riviere almost caught out Northmere from the edge of the area on 57 minutes with a delicate chip before a further opportunity came the way of Brown.

Hann and Scannell combined to deadly effect carving an opening for the goalscorer who found himself with just the keeper to beat. It fell to the left foot of Brown but the effort flew comfortably wide.

With seemingly very little on, MATT HANN produced a moment of magic with a sensational strike from an excellent individual effort as he let fly with an unstoppable hit, one that flew past the keeper and into the roof of the net to have Eastleigh coasting at 4-1.

Academy star, Chris Mason was brought on in the 70th minute to replace the brilliant Jamie Brown, and did not look out of place even at the tender age of 16.

It could have been worse for Weston-Super-Mare when Everitt launched a lethal throw-in into the penalty area. Forbes helped the ball on with his header but somehow the ball was scrambled away off the goal line with Scannell unable to turn the ball in, waiting at the back post.

Weston-Super-Mare rallied in the final ten minutes but it was too little too late.

Michael Taylor showed top technique as he brought down a ball into the box with his chest before bringing out the best in Kitteridge with a volley from point blank range.

A moment’s lapse in concentration from Eastleigh cost them a goal as PHILLIP HALL slammed home his second goal of the game from close range, despite Kitteridge getting a hand to the effort.

The game ended with a fine effort from a Mason 25-yarder that produced an equally splendid save out of Northmere who turned the ball around the post.

It was Eastleigh’s day who despite missing several key figures, put in a commanding performance to begin another cup run and as I believe, this is the furthest we have reached in this competition having been knocked out by AFC Wimbledon a year ago. We now have the opportunity to put ourselves to the test against teams from the Blue Square Premier.

Holgate on his way

Ahead of our FA Trophy game with Weston-Super-Mare on Saturday, it would appear Eastleigh have signed striker Ashan Holgate from tomorrow's visitors to the Silverlake Stadium.

New signing Ashan Holgate makes his debut against Braintree Town

ASHAN HOLGATE - On his Eastleigh debut against Braintree Town - 01/12/2007

"We (Weston-Super-Mare) have sold Ashan Holgate to Eastleigh Football Club. Eastleigh made an enquiry about him 10 days ago; we didn’t want Ashan to go but through personal reasons, in the end, it was in the best interests of Ashan that he moved to Eastleigh. Ashan is a player for the future; he’s still only 21 years of age, we’ve got a sell-on clause, if he moves on again.

Once he becomes a bit more consistent I think he will be a Football League player – his presence is immense and he’ll he sadly missed here at Weston super Mare Football Club.

It’s the best move for Ashan Holgate – we’ve only had him a short space of time, and we’re sad to see him go but we wish him all well and if it doesn’t work out for him he’s always welcome back."

Ashan, who is still only 21 can play either as an attacking midfielder or as a striker. Having been released from Swindon Town manager Paul Sturrock in May 2007, Holgate signed for Weston-Super-Mare at the start of the 2007/8 campaign.

Valuable Away Point - City 1-1 Eastleigh

Cambridge City 1 Eastleigh 1

Match Report by Ray Murphy

Eastleigh’s only two previous visits to Milton Road, Cambridge had both brought defeats. The home side opened the scoring after seventy-six seconds in this affair but Eastleigh fought back to earn a deserved draw.

The Eastleigh squad was pushed to its limits. Andy Harris and Paul Sales were both suspended but also unavailable through injury whilst Jamie Brown was also serving a one-match suspension.

Karim El Salahi was nursing a groin injury which saw the defender only last the first forty-five minutes. Manager Ian Baird gave a debut to new signing Warren Goodhind from Ebbsfleet United, the former Cambridge United, Barnet and Rochdale defender, started the game in a right back role before moving to his more accustomed central defensive role at the interval allowing Danny Smith to come in to the game at right back.

Starting with a formation with Andy Forbes being a lone striker, the home side attacked Eastleigh from the kick off. Anthony Thomas had already shown his danger on the right flank with his neat footwork even before Cambridge went ahead on seventy six seconds. A corner floated into the six yard box from the right hand side by Ashley Fuller was met by centre back Dave Theobald to give the home side the lead.

Clearly unsettled, Eastleigh took time to settle. After five minutes Goodhind’s short back pass was picked up by Thomas who strode into the area but James Pullen was quickly off his line to produce an excellent stop at the strikers feet. Eight minutes later Thomas this time the provider sent a cross into the box which saw Fuller fire a shot wide of the target.

Eastleigh switched formation soon after reverting to four in the middle of the park with Damian Scannell joining Forbes in a striking role. The move paid almost immediate dividends. Twenty minutes on the clock a long throw from former Cambridge City left back Adam Everitt was only half cleared by the City defence allowing Forbes to turn and fire home his eighteenth goal of the season.

Six minutes later Eastleigh showing the more attacking options now saw a David Hughes free kick receive a deft header from Forbes but the home goalkeeper Shane Herbert managed to read the strikers attempt. The home side were still creating their own chances with their leading scorer Michael Gash causing the Eastleigh defence problems, his shot on the turn from the edge of the box brought another Pullen stop.

The second period started slowly. On fifty-eight minutes though Pullen kept the scores level with a fine triple save to deny Gash after he broke free of the Eastleigh defence. The game was evenly balanced with seventeen minutes remaining Scannell bore down on the home defence with Forbes. The striking duo set up Anthony Riviere who fired a shot through the legs of a defender but Herbert saved his effort.

At the opposite end of the park a minute later Eastleigh failed to clear their lines from a free kick and Fuller let fly with a volley and Pullen brought the feintest of touches with an acrobatic save that saw the shot thunder against the bar but away to safety.

Forbes had the ball in the net again on seventy-six minutes being fed in by Scannell. Forbes slipped the ball past Herbert but was adjudged to have been offside.

In the closing minutes City substitute Lee Roache controlled a high ball into the area but saw his shot saved by Pullen, from the resulting corner Roache had another opportunity but turned his shot wide of the target.

10-Man Eastleigh Punished by Ref-Assisted Late Goal

Eastleigh 2nd XI 1-1 Ashford Town (Middx.) Res.
Suburban Premier League

TEAM: Grant Porter, Jon Horner, Theo Tonkin, Zeke Rink, Tom Roberts (c), Liam Winzar, Joe Sheppard, TJ McClory-Cuthbertson, James Screen, Joe Maxwell, Adam Heath

SUBS: Nathan Lynch (on for Maxwell 24), Niall Bryant (on for Tonkin 56), Perry Mullins (on for Winzar 56) - Unused: Aiden Sainsbury, Jason Sangha.

Match Report by Jamie Montigue

Eastleigh's second eleven were on course for their second win in the week following their 2-1 victory over Fleet Town on Monday night, but an abysmal display from the referee ultimately stopped them from securing all three points.

The first half was very even and in the opening stages neither side could really break each other down.

TJ McClory-Cuthbertson had a shot heading towards goal diverted by the man with the whistle on 11 minutes, in a move that saw good passing in the build up.

Ashford Town had a chance moments later with their centre forward, Jimmy Brazil's effort being deflected by both Tom Roberts and Zeke Rink before the ball was cleared off the line.
The visitors then came close from a Dan Sacha header from a right wing cross.

At the opposite end the Spitfires came within a whisker of taking the lead. Liam Winzar, who was back in the side today following a loan spell at Horndean, centred the ball with a superb delivery only for Joe Maxwell's powerful header to go narrowly over the cross bar.

Nathan Lynch was handed an early introduction to the action on 24 minutes as he replaced the injured Maxwell, who, it is thought has pulled his hamstring.

Good link up play from both of the Ashford strikers, Brazil and Joe Funicello created a decent chance for the Middlesex side, but having collided with Porter inside the penalty area the ball was blazed high over the top, thus squandering a great opportunity of a goal.

Alongside Lynch in the Eastleigh attack was Adam Heath, a trialist from Andover, and it was he who did well to force a corner midway through the half. James Screen's excellent delivery was met by a towering header from Lynch and was unlucky to fly just wide of the mark.

A minute later, the hosts keeping the pressure on, forced a further corner - this time Winzar's cross was deflected behind. Screen again curled the ball in towards Lynch, who attacked the ball well but the Ashford stopper claimed the ball ahead of the striker with good handling.

The half coming to a close, Joe Sheppard drilled a shot comfortably wide of the target following good interplay from both Lynch and Winzar.

In stoppage time, the visitors headed wide from a free kick.

HALF TIME: Eastleigh 2nd XI 0-0 Ashford Town Res.

The first half did see a couple of chances for either side but the game did not come to life really until the second forty-five where there was a sharp increase in goal mouth action.

Just three minutes in, Ashford were denied as they looked to break the stalemate. With Porter beaten initially, Theo Tonkin found himself well placed to block the ball on the goalline taking a nasty blow for the team in the process. The left back had to leave the field shortly after with blood pouring from his nose.

The follow up came straight back out to the Ashford number 9, though this time Porter made a very good save to tip around the post for a corner.

Jason Massing fired inches wide of the left upright with a well-struck shot from distance having cut in from the left flank as Ashford continued to show their intent.

Eastleigh had to up their game, and by all accounts they did. Adam Heath took on several opponents on the left hand side for the Spitfires with good pace and dribbling but perhaps could have either got the shot away earlier or fed the ball wide to Winzar who was free on the right with plenty of space, screaming for the pass.

Having made up good ground and getting to the edge of the penalty area, Heath had his shot charged down the ball falling to the feet of Screen who miscued his effort from the follow up.

Four minutes short of the hour mark, Eastleigh used their remaining two substitutions with a double swap. Niall Bryant replaced Theo Tonkin at left back whilst Liam Winzar made way for Perry Mullins on the right side of midfield.

An offside decision ruled out a goal for the visitors in the 58th minute when Simon James got the better of Bryant with great pace, before squaring. The ball was slammed home but it did not matter as the flag was already up on the far side.

Then came the opening goal of the game. Pure inspiration from Eastleigh's TJ McClory-Cuthbertson saw the former Portsmouth youngster chip an excellent measured pass over the top of the defence for the assist. It didn't look as though much was on, but NATHAN LYNCH pressurised the Ashford centre back and held his own for strength to get the better of his marker before slotting past the keeper for 1-0.

Eastleigh looked good for their advantage and wasted little time in searching for a second. A second defence splitting pass in a matter of minutes from TJ saw Perry Mullins pull the ball back into the centre. Heath's dummy saw Lynch with his back to goal, let the ball roll across his body before turning and hitting with his weaker left foot.

Great football from Brian and Adie's men that deserved better. On this occasion the goalkeeper did well to block the shot.

Only seven minutes had passed since the goal and still Eastleigh were looking to extend their lead. Lynch played the ball back to McClory-Cuthbertson, who took one touch to get it out of his feet before hitting a speculative curling effort with a great strike, one which came within inches of finding the net.

For all of Eastleigh's dominance in pressure and possession, Ashford did not give up on the contest and were it not for the woodwork would have found an equaliser. In the 66th minute, Jason Massing played the ball in to Funicello who shimmied left and right before thumping against the post with a powerful effort from eight yards.

Back on top momentarily, Heath ran at the defence with purpose and pace and in so doing drew the foul to win a free kick just 25 yards from goal. Screen played it short to Tom Roberts who scooped the ball hopelessly high and wide from a good opportunity.

Ashford were finding plenty of room, time and space in the midfield as the game opened up and Porter had to be at his best to thwart a good hit from Funicello on 70 minutes.

Disaster struck for the hosts when centre half, Zeke Rink had to be stretchered off for a dislocated shoulder and rushed to hospital. Having used all three substitutions, Eastleigh were down to ten men.

James Screen switched to left back with Niall Bryant moving across to the centre of the back four, whilst Heath dropped into the left of midfield leaving Lynch as the lone striker as Eastleigh had to go about the remaining twenty minutes a man down.

They reacted positively with Perry Mullins attacking the left back before getting to the byline and putting in a dangerous ball across the face of goal. The goalkeeper, Craig Ross could only flap at it, but Heath was unable to turn the ball goalwards.

At this point in the game, it became clear the referee lost what little grip he already had. Persisently rewarding Ashford Town with free kicks seemingly for little reason, Jon Horner was writhing in pain on the floor but was told to get up just moments after Nathan Lynch was penalised for being fouled at the other end!

Play went on for a couple of minutes before, at the second time of asking, the referee decided maybe the Eastleigh right back was in need of treatment after all. Horner made his feelings known and was booked for dissent, but in my eyes had every right to feel aggrieved as the man in black lost the respect of the players yet again.

Coming to the knowledge that they were up against 12 men, the Spitfires were made to endure a few nervy moments at the end as they looked to preserve their lead.

It looked as if they might just do it, when in the third minute of injury time the referee made his worst decision yet when James Screen won the ball fairly on the half way line. It was beyond belief that a free kick was awarded when the challenge was right in front of the referee's nose.

A real sickening moment for Eastleigh as the free kick was curled into the box and smashed into the roof of the net from six yards. The referee claiming the assist and robbing the Spitfires of the three points they deserved.

Jimmy Brazil might have won it in the closing stages as he was put clean through on goal but the Ashford Town striker lacked composure and failed to trouble Porter.

After the full time whistle, TJ McClory-Cuthbertson was shown a red card for comments to the very dire match official, whose performance would have made for interesting viewing for the referee's assessor sat in the stand.

Win for Reserves but it's Bad News for Chris Collins

STRUGGLING FLEET BEATEN BY HORNER'S WINNER

Eastleigh 2nd XI 2-1 Fleet Town Res.

Suburban Premier League

TEAM: Grant Porter, Jon Horner, Theo Tonkin, Chris Collins, Tom Roberts (c), James Screen, Aiden Sainsbury, Zeke Rink, TJ McClory-Cuthbertson, Scott Waters, Joe Maxwell

SUBS: Greg Bolt (on for Collins 24), Joe Sheppard (on for Tonkin 56), Callum Stanley (on for Maxwell 77) - Unused: Niall Bryant, Freddie Toomer.

GOALS: Greg Bolt (45), Jon Horner (78)

Match Report by Jamie Montigue

With three wins in their last four, Eastleigh's reserves have climbed high up the table to within touching distance of the top.

It started off badly for first team defender Chris Collins who played just 24 minutes before pulling his hamstring. Very bad news at a time when injuries are adding up by the day. The centre back was chasing a ball to the touchline from Rink when he went down clutching the back of his leg on 19 minutes.

Whilst Eastleigh went down to ten men temporarily, Collins was determined to get back on after doing a few stretches and runs on the sidelines but when he eventually returned after three minutes was unable to continue and was replaced by Greg Bolt.

Jon Horner had a great game throughout and had the first opportunity of the evening with a storming run from right back beating three men before planting his shot narrowly over the cross bar.

Good hold up play from Scott Waters high up the pitch saw the forward pull the ball back for Theo Tonkin when it looked as if nothing was on. Tonkin was brought down a yard outside the penalty area on the left hand side and TJ McClory-Cuthbertson's low driven free kick had to be deflected behind.

Fleet's Mark Anderson had a good opportunity at the opposite end but having drifted past the outstretched arms of Grant Porter on the edge of his penalty area, was muscled off the ball by a superb saving challenge from Horner.

Coming up to half an hour played, both sides were evenly matched and creating chances.

Anderson came close once more on 27 minutes as he brushed off Tom Roberts down the middle to find himself one on one with the goalkeeper, but this time Porter came off his line well to save with his legs - an important stop.

A cross from TJ on the right saw Zeke Rink attack the ball well in the centre only for the ball to be deflected up and into the safety of Dave Smalley's arms.

Eastleigh continued to press with a measured pass forward by James Screen, behind the defence and into the path of Waters, who was came off second best on this occasion to the outrushing goalkeeper.

With half time looming, the Spitfires mounted a good spell of pressure at just the right time. An Aidan Sainsbury corner from the left came back out but only as far as Screen whose dipping half volley wasn't far away.

The next attack saw Rink spread the play out to the right for TJ, who off-balance hit the ball over the top and was always rising.

Deservedly, Eastleigh got their just rewards right on half time when Screen jinked past two to draw the foul and win the free kick in a great position.

Both TJ and Sainsbury stood over it, but it was played short for the latter - the former Bournemouth youngster who let it roll across his body and onto his right foot. Sainsbury pulled the trigger with a thunderous strike and the best Smalley could do was push onto his own cross bar where Greg Bolt followed in well at the back post to finish and give the hosts a 1-0 lead going into the break.

HALF TIME: Eastleigh 2nd XI 1-0 Fleet Town Res.

Brian and Adie's men started brightly in the second half initially with Waters going down in the area, perhaps a little too easily before his strike partner had a glorious opportunity to double the advantage.

James Screen did ever so well to keep the ball in play on the left hand side before poking the ball through for Joe Maxwell who turned his man nicely but when it opened up for him in front of goal the shot was screwed comfortably wide.

Fleet were able to come back into the game moments later.

Prior to the equaliser, Theo Tonkin was beaten by Fleet's Josh Taylor only for the Eastleigh left back to be penalised for a blatant tug on his opponent as he looked to get away. Tonkin picking up a careless yellow card.

Then on 56 minutes, the scores were level as James Whittingham headed home into the top corner, unchallenged a right wing corner from 10 yards.

Joe Sheppard was immediately introduced as Tonkin made way, and the substitution looked to have steadied things at the back.

Full credit to Eastleigh for the way they responded to conceding, and really there was only going to be one winner.

Tom Pemberton hit a speculative effort from 30 yards that flew narrowly wide of Porter's post, before Scott Waters won a penalty having been brought down just inside the area.

With four goals to his name this season for the 2nd team, add to that scoring the winner in extra time against Totton in the Hampshire Senior Cup from the penalty spot just last week, it was Aidan Sainsbury who stepped up but his effort was kept out by a brilliant diving save from Smalley low to his right.

Eastleigh kept plugging away and eventually it paid off.

Zeke Rink had an excellent drive from distance crash against the post from Waters' lay off, though it wouldn't have mattered as the flag was up anyway.

TJ scooped a shot high over the cross bar minutes later before Callum Stanley came on for Joe Maxwell up front.

With twelve minutes remaining, Jon Horner ensured victory with an excellent winning goal. It was no more than both he and Eastleigh deserved for their efforts throughout the night. The right back broke into the box with a powerful run on the overlap before drilling confidently into the bottom left.

It may have been even better for the Spitfires. Four minutes from time, brilliant work from McClory-Cuthbertson down the right worked an opening and what an opportunity it was for Rink. The defensive minded player had got forward well and had the ball put on a plate for him just 6 yards out but somehow produced an unbelievable miss.

Then, in the closing stages Eastleigh
playing well right to the final whistle - a Callum Stanley cross was met by a great volley and excellent technique from Waters only to be denied by an equally good save.

Eastleigh 1-4 Bromley

EASTLEIGH v BROMLEY

SATURDAY 10th NOVEMBER 2007

Blue Square South

Eastleigh’s fantastic run of late today came to a shattering end following a dismal display at the hands of a well-organised, hard-working Bromley side.

October was a month, which saw Ian Baird win the manager of the month accolade for the Blue Square South. Three wins and a draw in the league, including the 3-0 demolition of a previously unbeaten Lewes, not to mention the club’s best ever cup run in history in a congested month of football.

This was then built on with the comprehensive 4-2 away win over Hayes & Yeading United last weekend as we know, but few could expect the outcome and the performance we witnessed this afternoon.

The visitors came into this game having suffered three defeats in their past four games but put this right behind them with a convincing win against an unusually lacklustre Spitfires side.

Adam Everitt was finally able to make his home league debut having been cup tied and suspended previously, meanwhile Anthony Riviere was handed his first start since the Welling defeat back in September owing to an Andy Harris injury. This, the only change from the winning eleven in our last outing.

It started well enough with Eastleigh playing the better football in the opening exchanges.
Bromley were made to endure heavy pressure with Adam Everitt proving to be a real threat from set pieces both with his left foot deliveries and his lethal long throw-ins. Both Andy Forbes and Karim El-Salahi forced corners early on, thus allowing the sustained period of pressure from the hosts.

Another dangerous throw on from Everitt fell kindly this time for Matt Hann, whose side-footed effort was blocked and then cleared.

Following yet more free kicks into the box, Eastleigh had a penalty shout on 16 minutes when Damian Scannell appeared to be wrestled to the ground by the Bromley captain Francis Duku. Referee, Stephen Phipps was well placed but bewilderingly penalised Scannell.

It was not quite 20 minutes into the half when Bromley first made an attack on goal. Garath McCleary was allowed too much time and space to get to the byline before crossing to the back post where Nic McDonnell met the ball with a header straight at Pullen.

The Lilywhites pushed forward strongly again moments later with a combination of James Pullen and David Hughes keeping the visitors at bay. A free kick from Simon Osborn saw the Eastleigh goalkeeper Pullen, alert to the danger producing a diving header near the corner flag. Hughes managed to clear the ball partly but only as far as Osborn who put the ball into the area this time, only for Pullen to claim in the air.

On the half-hour Duku collided with Forbes unfairly going up for a header to concede a free kick just 25 yards from goal. Both Chris Piper and Adam Everitt stood over the ball but it was the right foot of Piper whose excellent strike produced an equally stunning save from Andy Walker. The ball was heading for the top left hand corner and had to be tipped over the top to deny the former Fisher Athletic man.

From the resulting corner, Brown went for the overhead kick, which didn’t quite come off but Byles kept possession playing the ball to the edge of the area to tee up Matt Hann whose curling effort was comfortable for the goalkeeper.

David Hughes picked up the first yellow card of the afternoon for a mistimed tackle on the lively McCleary and this is when the afternoon was about to take a turn for the worse for Eastleigh.

Osborn’s centre was flicked on neatly by McDonnell for TUTU HENRIQUES who towered above his marker at the back post planting a downward header past Pullen.

Directly after the goal, Eastleigh worked a neat opening from a throw in on the right hand side with Damian Scannell linking up with Piper and Hughes whose floated ball into the box was met by a glancing header from Brown.

Bromley turned defence into attack with a swift counter attack. McCleary took the ball some 40 yards before evading a desperate lunge from Everitt, seemingly with ease, skipping past Pullen and having his left footed shot cleared off the goal line by Piper only for SAM WOOD to slam home the rebound.

This quickfire double took the stuffing right out of Eastleigh who suddenly looked despondent and in real trouble at two goals down.

The pace and danger of McCleary was evident once more as he drew the tackle from a frustrated Jamie Brown, who upended the winger to earn himself a yellow card.

There were a couple of half chances before the break with Piper’s miscued volley going hopelessly wide and into injury time Everitt’s ball into the box saw Forbes underneath it but unable to get a shot away.

HALF TIME: Eastleigh 0-2 Bromley

Into the second half, either side could have scored within a minute of each other. First Sam Wood played the ball in behind the Eastleigh defence for McDonnell. The flag stayed down, however Karim El-Salahi got back to make a good recovering challenge.

At the opposite end, Damian Scannell sliced a half volley inches wide of goal from Hughes’ cross with Walker at full stretch.

Eastleigh seemed a little brighter momentarily, Anthony Riviere making a good run down the right cutting in and having a shot charged down before Scannell weaved past both Wood and Jerome Sobers in the next move, eventually losing the ball to Peter Adeniyi.

It was clear at this point that if the Spitfires had got the next goal there might a glimmer of hope though the longer the game went on, unfortunately it just didn’t look likely.

Paul Sales replaced Riviere in the 58th minute but the substitute was soon to be replaced, just under ten minutes later having pulled his groin.

On the hour mark, Bromley looked to trouble Pullen with McDonnell’s excellent knock over the top being brought down by Gareth Williams who went for the lob but didn’t get hold of it in the way he would have liked, leaving the Eastleigh stopper with a simple catch.

A miserable afternoon at the Silverlake Stadium saw another sour moment as the 659 crowd watched Bromley help themselves to a comfortable three goal cushion.

Bromley’s leading goalscorer NIC McDONNELL was allowed to continue his run unopposed and consequently unchallenged. Cutting in from the left-hand side the centre forward went for goal with a curling effort from range. It looked as though Pullen might have kept the ball out under his own cross bar having done well to get across to it but despite his best efforts the shot nestled in the top corner as the visitors stretched their lead yet further.

The nightmare continued for Ian Baird’s men as they conceded, hopelessly, a fourth goal shortly after. GARETH WILLIAMS out of nothing hit a special strike from 30 yards to lob Pullen and put the game beyond any doubt.

Despite the drubbing, the fans behind the goal for Eastleigh were a real credit singing from start to finish and on this positive DAMIAN SCANNELL found the back of the net from Chris Piper’s threaded assist, as he squeezed an excellent finish through the legs of the goalkeeper.

It was nothing but a consolation goal ten minutes from time, on an otherwise extremely miserable afternoon for Eastleigh.

Williams hit a great drive in the closing stages that Pullen could only palm away.

A bad day at the office certainly, now is the time to regroup for the next match and to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.

Hants Senior Cup Success over Totton

Eastleigh progressed in the Hampshire Senior Cup with a win against last year’s FA Vase finalists Totton, with in the main, a reserve side.

Gareth Howells and Fitzroy Simpson made their debuts with both Danny Smith and Chris Collins gaining invaluable match fitness to help bolster the youthful side.

Youth-product Nathan Lynch scored twice before Aiden Sainsbury ensured the win in extra time with a late penalty to see Eastleigh through to the last sixteen and a place in the quarter finals.

Baird Scoops Manager of the Month Award for Blue Square South

Eastleigh's very own Ian Baird has been awarded the Blue Square South Manager of the Month award for October having seen the Spitfires on an excellent unbeaten run in the league.

The winners in full are as follows:

Blue Square Announce "Manager of the Month" Winners for October

Histon boss Steve Fallon has won the Blue Square "Manager of the Month" award for October. The Stutes won three of their four games during the month, recording two away victories at resurgent York City and fellow Blue Square Premier newcomers Droylsden. Fallon has guided his part-time team to within touching distance of the play-off positions following last year’s promotion season.

The award is judged by a panel of experts including Setanta Blue Square Premier pundit Paul Parker. Parker had this to say about Fallon: "The fact that Histon can see full-time teams like Exeter, York and Oxford below them in the table shows what a fantastic job Steve Fallon has done at the Glassworld Stadium".

In the Blue Square South the award goes to newly appointed Eastleigh manager Ian Baird. The former Havant & Waterlooville boss took charge of his first game only a few days into the month, a 2-2 draw at Bishop’s Stortford. The Spitfires then went on to record two 3-0 victories at home to high flying Lewes and away at Weston Super Mare.

Hyde United manager Steve Waywell scooped the award in the Blue Square North. Hyde achieved a one hundred percent record throughout the period with four wins from four games, conceding only 2 goals in the process. The highlight of the month was a 5-1 away victory at Leigh RMI.

Blue Square Announce "Player of the Month" Winners for October

Exeter City striker Richard Logan has been voted by fans as the Blue Square Premier "Player of the Month" for October. Logan polled over 40 percent of the votes, after a month in which he scored four goals including a hat-trick at Salisbury City. The former England youth and schoolboy international also scored the only goal of the game in The Grecians 1-0 home win over Grays Athletic.

The award in the Blue Square North goes to Gareth Seddon of Hyde United. Seddon helped his team to a record of four wins from four games during the period, scoring 4 goals. All of Seddon’s goals came away from home, as his club climbed into the promotion places in the division.

Bishop’s Stortford striker Greg Pearson wins the Blue Square South award after a month in which he scored four goals in three games. The highlight of the month was a hat-trick in his sides 4-0 away victory at Weston Super Mare.

The Goals Keep Coming

Hayes & Yeading United 2 Eastleigh 4

Match Report by Ray Murphy

Though Eastleigh had visited Church Road, Hayes twice previously, this was the first time that they had visited the ground under the guise of the newly merged Hayes & Yeading United. The two previous trips had never seen an Eastleigh victory. This time Eastleigh earned a highly deserved victory, the only disappointing outcome of the afternoon was conceding two goals in the last ten minutes as they were coasting to victory.

The home side were on a run of seven league games undefeated, whilst Eastleigh were patching together their side following their midweek FA Cup exit at Forest Green Rovers. With Matt Hann and Karim El Salahi both passing late fitness tests, the FA Cup tied Adam Everitt came in to the side to fill his normal left back role with Chris Piper moving up into midfield allowing Damian Scannell a striking role and David Hughes returning to the midfield with Anthony Riviere and Paul Sales both dropping to the substitutes bench.

Eastleigh were in front in four minutes. Piper’s cross from the left being met by the head of the rising Andy Forbes to glide home the first goal of the afternoon.

A highly bright start but the game took some time to pick up momentum. Eastleigh were by far having the better of the afternoon. Midway through the half Hughes’ pass into the path of Hann saw the diminutive winger power a low shot across the face of the goal just before Eastleigh added their second. Twenty six minutes played and again from the left flank but this time an Everitt free kick to the far post saw the figure of Forbes rising to repeat his act of some twenty minutes earlier.

A minute later and the Eastleigh following were ecstatic again. Damian Scannell causing problems on the left flank saw his cross parried away by home goalkeeper Kevin Davies the ball sitting up for Piper to rattle home his first goal for The Spitfires.

The home side who had not been seen as an attacking force had been using their flanks well with right winger Danny Allen-Page in particular showing an impressive performance, started to create a couple of openings as the first half was drawing to a close. One cross from Allen-Page fell awkwardly for Andy Harris who was relieved to see keeper James Pullen gather the loose ball. Another Allen-Page cross saw a speculative overhead attempt from the home sides leading scorer Staforde Palmer which was pushed over the bar by Pullen then Kieran Knight headed a Will Hendry corner just wide.

Hayes & Yeading had the first chance of the second period, again Allen-Page but again Pullen was equal to the midfielders shot. Fifty-nine minutes and Luke Byles had a header from a Piper cross just wide of the target but a minute later Eastleigh found themselves with a four-goal cushion. Davies slipped taking his goal kick and the ball fell for Scannell. Ignoring the calling Forbes, Scannell took the ball past the covering defender before planting a firm left foot drive down past the feet of Davies into the net.

At this stage it was starting to appear that Eastleigh would score at will. Forbes set up Piper who was then denied by a Davies stop, substitute Riviere and Forbes combined which ended up with Forbes’ shot striking the inside of the post before being cleared to safety. The game then took a twist for the final ten minutes.

Palmer had already shown his danger, which has already seen him score seven goals this season. Having seen another effort saved by Pullen, Palmer finally beat the keeper in the seventy ninth minute. A cross from Josh Scott saw Palmer miss his first attempt at a goalbound strike but he recovered to slot home with the second. Palmer showed he meant business still by busily collecting the ball to get the game restarted.

Four minutes later and Palmer was celebrating again volleying home from inside the six-yard area and a few Eastleigh nerves were starting to fray. Palmer had another effort again taken by Pullen to take the sting out of the final Hayes goalmouth melee.

Eastleigh had the last chance of the afternoon when Danny Smith set up Sales but Davies denied the strikers effort.

In the final minute of the game the home side were reduced to ten men. Skipper Nevin Saroya showed his frustration of the afternoon with a scything challenge on Riviere, which saw referee David Rock produce a second yellow card and Saroya was off for the early bath.

Match Report by Jamie Montigue

Since the 6-0 thrashing of Burgess Hill at the beginning of October, Eastleigh's second string have had a mixture of results with a 3-3 draw away to Metropolitan Police, before crashing out of the Southampton Senior Cup going down 1-3 to Bush Hill. Last weekend the youngsters got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Harefield United with Tom Price netting both goals.

Today, Eastleigh were up against Wealdstone and after surviving early pressure from the visitors - went on to record another impressive win.

Inside thirty seconds, goalkeeper Grant Porter was called in to action to deny the Wealdstone centre forward who had made a good turn on the edge of the area before getting his shot away.

The Spitfires had another let off when a shot whistled narrowly over the cross bar following good skill on the right hand side from the Wealdstone right winger.

Despite not having the greatest of starts, Eastleigh found their feet and went ahead on 14 minutes when Nathan Lynch combined with TJ McCLORY-CUTHBERTSON, who brought the ball down expertly before tucking away into the bottom left hand corner with a smart finish.

A goal to the good, Eastleigh still found themselves having to deal with a fair amount of pressure but seemed to switch off at corner kicks and were perhaps fortunate not to concede so soon after taking the advantage.

They were soon back to their best when Scott Waters was unlucky to be pulled back for offside when played clean through on goal by Lynch, and then just moments later Brian and Adie's men had the ball in the back of the net once more.

Captain and midfield general, Chris Mason hit a thumping drive from 30 yards. The ball crashed against the underside of the cross bar and came back out for James Screen to neatly follow up and beat the keeper. What should have been goal number two for Eastleigh, was soon to be ruled out for an appalling offside decision against the midfielder.

This would have put daylight between the two sides and things would have been that much more comfortable but it wasn't to be.

Two minutes after the goal that never stood, Eastleigh again struck the woodwork. This time it was the goalscorer McClory-Cuthberson whose powerful strike from range had the keeper in all sorts of trouble and was unfortunate to hit the top of the bar.

A further chance saw the impressive new left back, Theo Tonkin bring the ball forward from deep only to see his good effort saved at the near post.

At this stage in the game it looked as though Eastleigh had found their stride and were beginning to show signs of excellent football. One move in particular saw a string of nine or ten passes with the ball being worked across the pitch from right to left and back again before it eventually broke down.

The visitors finished the half the stronger side however with a whole host of opportunities. Chris Mason continued his fine performance with an excellent saving header to clear off the line with Porter beaten.

Striking the foot of the post in their next move, the Wealdstone left winger cutting in from the flank to beat Jon Horner, Eastleigh were extremely fortunate to stay in front.

If that wasn't enough, with eight minutes remaining in the half the London based club were left ruing what could have been as they missed an even greater chance. A real sitter from 6 yards looked certain to bring the scores level but unbelievably and fortunately for the hosts, the shot was hooked well wide of goal.

HALF TIME - Eastleigh 2nd XI 1-0 Wealdstone Res.

Continuing in the same vein, the Spitfires found themselves on the back foot at the beginning of the second half. With better composure from their opponents, they surely would have been made to pay the price. Wealdstone definitely had enough chances to get back in the game.

Nathan Lynch had a header deflected behind from an Aiden Sainsbury free kick a little later on. This leading to successive corner kicks for Eastleigh. James Screen couldn't quite get hold of his shot from the edge of the area as he fired over the top.

Back to their best it would seem, the home side now creating some pressure of their own. An interception in a good position up the pitch from forward Scott Waters, saw Screen whip an excellent delivery into the penalty area from the left wing to force another corner ball.

From the resulting set piece, the ball was played short to Jon Horner who let fly with a stinging drive, one which saw the Wealdstone keeper spill the ball on to his own post before gathering at the second attempt ahead of Lynch.

Waters then had a shot blocked on way to goal following neat interplay between TJ and Horner down the right, whilst at the opposite end a free kick wasn't too far off the mark for the Royals.

The game coming towards its end, it still could have gone either way in all honesty. TJ probably should have done better from a central free kick from 25 yards, when Waters was brought down unfairly by the Wealdstone captain.

Perry Mullins, a second half sub, attacked a further free kick - this time from a deeper position. His powerful header at the back post but was denied by good handling from the goalkeeper.

Eastleigh stood tall to see off the game and hold on to their lead with brave defending as the visitors upped their game to try and pinch a share of the spoils with a late strike.

James Screen epitomised the work rate with one tackle in particular that demonstrated the passion and hunger from a youthful side to win the game.

On the counter attack with minutes remaining, Nathan Lynch came close to putting the game beyond doubt as Mclory-Cuthbertson's route one style ball over the top was met by the striker picking it up on the half volley and going just wide.

It was pleasing to see Eastleigh come out on top and though it wasn't the most convincing win we might see from these lads the commitment and determination cannot be faulted. The three points were deserved and should take us ever close to the top two sides in the table.
