Eastleigh 1-0 Bognor Regis

EASTLEIGH V BOGNOR REGIS
SATURDAY 15TH APRIL 2006

CONFERENCE SOUTH

Eastleigh take all three points this afternoon after being gifted a goal in the first half, they didn’t really look like being broken down and were solid at the back with good performances from Chris Collins and Rob Marshall in the centre of defence.

It is becoming common now that Eastleigh make good starts to each match. And today was no exception. In the 4th minute good distribution from Shaw found Ian Oliver in space down the left hand side who managed to play a good ball down the line for Dave Town. Town played the ball back to Oliver whose dangerous cross just evaded Andy Forbes who was lurking in the area at the back post.

Chris Collins, who was away in Eastleigh’s last match against Cambridge, made a powerful surging run from centre back, getting round the back of the Bognor full back before excellently winning a corner ball for his team!

The home side took the lead in the 13th minute when a mix up between the Bognor goalkeeper and defender resulted in the keeper slipping as he rushed out to try and clear the ball and Dave Town picked up the pieces brilliantly to tuck home into an empty net from 20 yards to give Eastleigh a well deserved lead.

Paul Doswell’s side continued to threaten with Andy Forbes and Dave Town coming close.

Mid-way through the half, a great interception from the young full back Jack Smith won Eastleigh possession and from it a good cross from Dave Town was met by the captain Danny Smith whose powerful strike from the edge of the area was well saved.

Down the other end, the visitors began to threaten. A corner ball from the left hand side was met in the middle with a low strike and a good save from Shaw saw him push the ball on to the cross bar to prevent the equaliser.

After the lively start made by Eastleigh, the game began to become a little scrappy and it certainly quietened down somewhat. Having said that Eastleigh did well to get the goal, and they defended exceptionally well when called upon.

HALF TIME – Eastleigh 1-0 Bognor Regis

The second half began at a frantic pace and the two keepers at either end were tested early on and on both occasions they pulled off top quality saves to keep the score at 1-0.

Firstly, in the 46th minute, Ashford’s free kick was met brilliantly by Andy Forbes whose header looked destined for the far corner of the goal, but somehow the keeper kept the effort out and tipped the ball around the post for a corner ball.

Only four minutes later, Shaw was on hand to prevent the equaliser, again with a top quality save. It was a well-worked move down the right from Bognor and their striker tested Shaw to the full when his effort looked to be picking out the top corner, however Shaw had other ideas and a one handed save thwarted the attack.

Andy Forbes could have put Eastleigh 2-0 up in the 55th minute when Ian Oliver’s pass down the left touchline found Forbes in acres of space. The in form striker got behind the Bognor defence and had a free shot on goal inside the eighteen yard box but the shot lacked power and it was easy for the keeper to get to.

Towards the end of the game, chances were few and far between. The substitutes brought a fresh impetus to the game for Eastleigh with Richard Hodgson playing particularly well.

Adam Roberts, another second half sub, latched on to David Hughes lofted pass to beat his man and get his shot on target to win a corner for Eastleigh and from it Hodgson skinned his marker and put in a good cross to the far post but no one was there to get on the end of it.

The win sees Eastleigh continue their good run of late and hopefully this can be carried into our last few league games and in particular this Thursday’s cup final against Gosport.
