Eastleigh v Farnborough - Match preview
Match preview by Kieran James
Ian Baird’s Spitfires will look to extend their unbeaten home league run to twelve games against Hampshire rivals Farnborough on Saturday at The Silverlake Stadium (3pm kick off).
Eastleigh head into this game on the back of a 3-1 win at home to Cornish side Truro City last Saturday.
Bradley Bubb opened the scoring after 17 minutes heading a ball into the back of the net after winger Damian Scannell put in a pinpoint cross for the on-loan Aldershot striker Bubb to score his eighth goal in Eastleigh colours.
Ten minutes later Eastleigh’s right back Mitchell Nelson made a powerful run down the right wing and crossed a low ball into the box. Jamie Brown was on hand to meet the ball and tap into the unguarded goal to double The Spitfires lead.
Truro City’s captain Jake Ash got one back for the visitors in the second half. Aaron Pugh headed the ball from a free kick in to the path of Ash who pounced on the loose ball to make it 2-1.
Former Farnborough midfielder Daryl McMahon set up another former Boro player Bradley Bubb who sprinted past the defence and slotted home his ninth goal in six games for The Spitfires to earn Eastleigh another three points at home.
The Yellows are in good form having only lost one game in their last six and sit in second on goal difference in the form table, (Eastleigh sit in 3rd). Farnborough, who are in 12th place in the division, have been given a five point deduction for finanical irregularities.
Farnborough’s recent form has not come unnoticed as manager Spencer Day won Blue Square Bet South manager of the month and has attracted Aldershot Town defender Doug Bergqvist on loan for a month making a return for Boro since his loan expired back in January.
The Yellows didn’t get off to the best of starts last Saturday at home to Tonbridge Angels though, as Mikel Suarez opened the scoring for the visitors.
On loan AFC Totton striker Michael Charles equalised for the home side twelve minutes later and defender Orlando Jeffery took the lead for The Yellows after sixteen minutes.
Striker Phillip Page doubled The Yellows advantage just one minute into the second half before Rory Hill got one back for the visitors with twenty minutes to go. It wasn’t enough and Farnborough won their fifth game in six matches.
Former Farnborough striker Bradley Bubb, who scored 40 goals in 88 appearances for Boro, has won the Blue Square Bet South player of the month in February. Bubb has scored nine goals in his eight appearances for The Spitfires helping Eastleigh into 6th place..
Eastleigh have signed striker Lee Phillips from Blue Square Bet Premier side Bath City until the end of the season.
The former under 15′s and under 21′s England rugby union player began his career at Plymouth Argyle scoring only one goal in 50 appearances and has played for a host of clubs including Weymouth, Exeter City and more recently Cambridge United.
In other news left back Michael Green started in a reserve game on Monday and scored Eastleigh’s second goal with a darting run and finishing with a superb strike in a 2-0 win over Poole Town in the Wyvern Premier League.
Surburban Premier League reserve captain and centre back Will Aimson secured himself a trial at Championship outfit Hull City and featured in a reserve team game in a 0-1 loss against Hartlepool.
Jamie Brown is suspended for Saturday’s game having picked up ten yellow cards in all competitions which will see him out for two games. Brown's absence could hand former Farnborough midfielder Philip Appiah a chance to prove himself in central midfield.
