Blue Square Monthly Awards - March 2012

MELLON RIPE FOR AWARD AS COD ARMY CLOSE IN ON TITLE

Fleetwood Town manager Micky Mellon has been named the Blue Square Bet Premier ‘manager of the month’ for March. Mellon’s side moved eight points clear in the title race as they took 19 points from a possible 21. They scored 18 goals in the process, conceding just four. Four of their fixtures during the period were against teams in the top eight, dropping two points away at Mansfield Town in a 1-1 draw the only blip on an otherwise spotless record. They ended March with a 4-1 win Bath City which extended their unbeaten run in the division to 26 games as they close in on a number of league records.

In the Blue Square Bet North the ‘manager of the month’ award for March goes to Guiseley AFC manager Steve Kittrick. Fixture congestion lead to Kittrick’s side playing nine league games during the month as they try to overhaul long-term leaders Hyde. The period included a 1-0 win at the leaders as well as an impressive away win at fellow promotion chaser FC Halifax Town. Guiseley collected 20 points from a possible 27, with their only defeat coming away at Gloucester City.

The Blue Square Bet South ‘manager of the month’ for March goes to Jason Bristow from Basingstoke Town. Bristow was handed the manager’s job at the Camrose following the departure of Frank Gray in late February. He became the division’s youngest manager but remained undaunted as he took his side on a fantastic run which could still result in a play-off place. A four match winning run to end the period puts them just four points off 5th place with a game in hand. The highlight of the month a 1-0 win away at fellow play-off hopefuls Chelmsford City.

CAVANAGH MAKES IT A FLEETWOOD DOUBLE WITH PLAYER AWARD

Peter Cavanagh from Fleetwood Town has been named the Blue Square Bet Premier ‘player of the month’ for March. The former Liverpool youth team player moved into Fleetwood’s midfield at the start of the month and has produced assured performances along with getting his name on the scoresheet in the 4-1 win at Bath City. Cavanagh has also popped up with a handful of important assists during the period in which his side have only conceded four goals as they close in on the title.

In the Blue Square Bet North the ‘player of the month’ for March is Josh Wilson from Vauxhall Motors. The striker hit seven goals as an ever-present in the side during the month including a hat-trick in the 4-2 win at Eastwood Town. At times partnering player-boss Carl Macauley, who narrowly missed out on the division’s managerial award for the month. Motors find themselves in the final relegation spot but have closed in on the sides above them after their fantastic run which Wilson was a big part of. With a month left they could pull off a great escape!

The Blue Square Bet South ‘player of the month’ for March is Giuseppe Sole from Woking. As the Cards march on to the title striker Sole has been in fantastic form. Hitting nine goals in six starts for Garry Hill’s team, with braces in games against Thurrock, Weston-super-Mare and Dorchester Town. Woking end the month eight points clear at the top of the table with just five games left.
