Eastleigh v Oxford City - FA Cup Trivia
Eastleigh FC's Press Officer Malcolm Clarke looks ahead to Saturday's (15th October) FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round tie between the Spitfires and Oxford City, 3pm kick off at the Silverlake Stadium.
"I believe that the only competitive match between Eastleigh and Oxford City at first team level
was in 1992/93 when the Eastleigh starting line-up was Wheeler, Day, Lisk,
Packer, Harrison, Hanley, Kane, Farmiloe, A R Price, A J Price and Doswell. Our
goal in a 3-1 defeat was scored by Paul Doswell, the only goal Eastleigh have
scored against Oxford City.
"One of Oxford City's strikers Steve Basham has scored one goal for Saints in the Premiership, when he scored the second goal in a 2-0 win at Blackburn in 1998/99. Immediately after that game Blackburn parted with their manager Roy Hodgson.
"The father and uncle of Eastleigh supporter Steve Gale (sometimes referred to as Steve Blade), are both former Oxford City players, and the club had their best ever run in the F A Cup in 1969/70 when they reached the second round proper before losing to Swansea Town. In the next round Swansea Town played eventual losing finalists Leeds United.
"Oxford City hold two F A Cup records which may never be broken. In 1971/72 their tie with Alvechurch required five replays, which was before the days in which replays were settled with penalty shoot outs. Also in 1999/00 their replay with Wycombe Wanderers was abandoned after 120 minutes had been played, leaving a third game to be played. This is believed to be the only F A Cup tie that has produced three full games since penalty shoot outs were introduced."
