Baird's upbeat despite defeat
By Wendy Gee -
EASTLEIGH manager Ian Baird was delighted with his team's performance at Truro City last night - despite a second consecutive defeat.
Andrew White equalised for Eastleigh on the stroke of half-time but a 58th-minute Scott Walker penalty secured the points for newly-promoted Truro in front of a bumper Cornish crowd.
Eastleigh lost their opening game of the season at home to Basingstoke but had enough chances to win comfortbly last night.
Schoolboy Sam Wilson and goalscorer White both hit the woodwork and there were chances for Jamie Slabber, Richard Gillespie and Jordace Holder-Spooner - before Ross Bottomley had an effort cleared off the line in injury-time.
Baird said: "We played very, very well. With the chances we had we should have been out of sight. But [39-year-old former Fulham striker] Barry Hayles used all his experience to win a penalty and that lost us the game.
"Unfortunately the ref fell for the three-card trick from an experienced former Premiership player.
"We hit the post and the crossbar, it wasn't our night and to lose was a bitter pill to swallow. But I'm very proud of the players.
"Considering how young and inexperienced our side is, we did very well. It was a very good performance."
Brilliant effort and performance by our new-look team and supporters. Special BAFTA Award to Hayles for his penalty seeking stunt. Wooden spoon to the ref for falling for it. Looking good........Seatonspitfire
