Eastleigh bank their first point

By Wendy Gee -

IAN Baird’s new look Eastleigh side came of age last night with a 0-0 home draw against bookies’ title favourites Woking.

Few would have given the Spitfires a prayer before kick-off following a run of three successive defeats which had nailed them to the foot of the Blue Square Bet South.

But Eastleigh stuck rigidly to their game plan and emerged with a well deserved first point of the season in front of an appreciative 665 crowd.

“I said before the game that I wasn’t panicking and the lads did very, very well tonight,” said Baird.

“We had a game plan against a side who I think will be in the top two this season, based on the size and quality of their squad, and our players can be proud of themselves for sticking rigidly to the task.

“We lost Ross Bottomley when he turned his ankle after 35 minutes which could have disjointed us, but we reshuffled by switching Danny Smith to right-back and bringing on Jordace Holder-Spooner.

“We’ve brought in Henrik Breimyr, a 19-year-old Norwegian loanee from Aldershot Town, and he did very well in midfield. He’s got a typical Scandinavian attitude and is very disciplined.”
