Eastleigh 1-4 Yeading

EASTLEIGH V YEADING
FRIDAY 6TH OCTOBER 2006

Conference South

Eastleigh yet again, start brightly but are made to look very ordinary at best by a Yeading side that looked good going forward and made the most of their chances – something that the Spitfires failed to do. This result now sees Paul Doswell’s side languishing at the foot of the table with just nine points on the board from 12 games with a bare three points separating them from being rock bottom. To make matters worse Eastleigh have now played a game more than most other teams and so could find themselves sink even lower once those around them have played their game in hand.

Other than Jamie Brown and debutant Steve West, who looks set to become a sound acquisition for the club, there was very little else in a match that saw Eastleigh dominate the opening twenty five minutes, with Yeading barely getting a sniff of the ball. Davis Haule made the most of some sloppy defending as he stunned the 700 plus crowd at the Silverlake Stadium as all of Eastleigh’s pressure and good football went out of the window there and then. The visitors doubled their lead via a gift from a corner with Nathan Bowdon-Haase left with the easy job of firing home from six yards. Andy Forbes netted a second half penalty but from here the defence went to pot and conceded another two sloppy goals.

The match very nearly started off in the best possible manner for the Spitfires as Jamie Brown and had a go from way out as Andy Harris played it to the former Magpie only ten seconds into the game. Brown’s effort was hit with power and swerve only just fell short of picking out the top corner.

It was all Eastleigh as they kept bombarding Yeading, holding the Ding back their own half under a great deal of pressure. Andy Forbes had a half chance on the edge of the area but his turn and hit cleared the stand.

Andy Harris, who it is believed will now sign a permanent deal with the club having spent a month on loan from Weymouth, looked sharp in the opening stages of the game. He reacted well to a poor clearance to get whip the ball in to the box looking for Brown in the centre but the cross was deflected and in the end it was a comfortable save for Delroy Preddie.

Eastleigh continued to command the play with assured, crisp passing and solid defending from Steve West who won every header barely allowing Yeading out of their own half. Following a good build up involving a cross-field ball from West the ball came back into the centre for David Hughes who let fly with a swerving effort however it was slightly off target and Yeading had yet another let-off, who at this point could and probably should have been at least a goal down for all of the pressure that they were under.

New-boy Bertie Brayley on his home league debut showed in fits and starts his superb technical ability. Eastleigh again came forward with an expert ball down the right touchline by Hughes for Forbes who brought it down teeing up Brayley. The cross was half-cleared but only as far as Brayley who eloquently skipped past three defenders with amazing balance at pace before forcing a good save out of Preddie down low to his left.

The game was turned on it’s head in an instant when a long punt up the field had Steve West on the back foot as he managed to just get a flick on the ball with his head. It was short of Wayne Shaw though, who came rushing out of his goal but in his attempt to cut out the danger DAVIS HAULE was onto the mistake like a flash and had the easiest of finished curling around Shaw into an empty net to take a 1-0 lead from their first ‘attack’ of the game.

From here, Eastleigh struggled to find the spark needed to get back in the game, and began to look nervous as Yeading took the upper hand. Passes were going astray, whereas in the opening twenty-five minutes Eastleigh were picking out the right ball every time. This allowed the visitors to come at the Spitfires, who looked very frustrated at not making their dominance count before the Yeading goal.

The one player that was still giving their all was Jamie Brown who still fought for everything up the front battling away for his side but he needed a lot more help than he got at times.

Eastleigh fell even further behind to a gift. A succession of corners from Yeading, spelled trouble for Eastleigh as after each dead ball they looked nervous and narrowly escaped. The first corner from the right saw Wayne Shaw fail to collect at the back post as Yeading pounced and were denied only by a slight deflection. From the very next corner, Yeading made it 2-0. The ball went out to the far side of the penalty box again only this time Francis Benali passed it straight to NATHAN BOWDEN-HAASE who had it put on a plate for him to side foot the ball into the corner from six yards.

Moments before half time, ex-Spitfire Jefferson Louis came close to haunting his old club as he made the most of more shambolic defending getting on the end of a dangerous cross from Marlon Patterson forcing a parry out of Shaw with the ball hooked away by Adam James to prevent the follow up.

HALF TIME – Eastleigh 0-2 Yeading

The break gave Eastleigh a chance to get their heads together and for a good fifteen minutes were the better side once more.

David Hughes and Jamie Brown linked up well to tee up Andy Harris whose 35-yard stinger was too hot to handle for Preddie but with no one following in, the Yeading keeper collected at the second attempt.

Eastleigh showed just how dangerous they can be when they get the ball down and pass it and this is exactly what gave them a chance to restore a point. Jamie Brown won the ball on the right hand side of goal with an excellent challenge before holding it up and playing a wayward ball into the middle. Hughes won it back though nicking it away from the Yeading centre half knocking it back to Andy Harris who split the Ding defence in two with a lovely ball for Brown. As the Eastleigh striker controlled the ball he was brought to the ground under a heavy challenge leaving the referee no option but to award a penalty.

ANDY FORBES stepped up as coolly as ever and smashed the ball with venom straight down the middle and into the roof of the net to pull a goal back for the Spitfires.

This goal saw renewed hope in the Eastleigh side for a brief spell and they very nearly found the equaliser with their best attack of the game just after the hour mark. Skipper, Danny Smith played an exquisite through ball for Forbes who rounded his defender twice before working an opening to drill the ball at goal from the edge of the box. It looked destined for the back of the net but Preddie somehow got across his goal to tip over the bar with an equally good save.

From the resulting corner, Steve West came a whisker away from his first goal with a good header at the back post from Bertie Brayley’s in swinging corner.

However, just when Eastleigh were back on top they were knocked down even quicker. A complete misunderstanding between Adam James and Wayne Shaw led to a woeful third for Yeading as substitute MARVIN MORGAN, scorer of two goals against Eastleigh last season, capitalised with an easy finish. James looked set to clear the ball into touch but instead slowed up whilst shielding the ball as Shaw rushed out of his goal needlessly. Morgan got in between making the most of a lack of communication and a poor judgement from the Eastleigh stopper to come off his line in the first place as James had the situation under control.

Now that Yeading were back on top there was only going to be one winner. Marlon Paterson hit the ball sweetly from distance but Shaw produced a top class one handed save to deny what would have been a special goal.

Yeading inflated the scoreline with a fourth from Jeff Goulding. Danger man, Paterson cut inside from the left and with the defence in pieces picked out another second half substitute JEFF GOULDING, who simply couldn’t miss.

A couple of minutes before this goal saw a great opportunity to score from a free kick completely wasted by Andy Harris. Danny Smith was clattered outside the box but Harris got it all wrong blasting way over.

The game ended with another poorly taken free kick with Steve West screwing the ball towards the corner flag from 25 yards. This just about summing up the story of Eastleigh’s night.

Despite the frustration, and the heavy defeat, Eastleigh must dig deep now more than ever to put things right.
