In the opening stages of the game Eastleigh had a fair few chances with Martin Beck at the heart of it. Beck, who has re-signed for the club following an injury-struck spell at Lymington, was brought down on the left having poked the ball past the full back. From the free kick Beck picked out Ben Ngwa back for the weekend from University, whose header flew wide of goal.
Martin Beck also had a free kick float all the way through to the goalkeeper still inside the opening ten minutes of the game. At the other end, Waltham should have punished some lacklustre defending from a well-worked free kick of their own. A dangerous ball in from the right flew across the face of goal but no one attacked the back post and the chance was gone.
This seemed to give Waltham some belief as they put together a good spell of pressure and possession. Jamie Haywood had a dip from all of 30 yards producing a fine save out of Luke Douglas who back pedaled before palming over the cross bar. An even better stop was yet to come, from Douglas.
A lovely delivery from the left saw a glancing header denied by fantastic instincts from the excellent Eastleigh goalkeeper with what was clearly save of the game. This double save from the former Southampton keeper, helped his side through a tricky spell when they needed him most. Forest's second consecutive corner was also met by a firm header, only this time it struck Sam Stannard (close to his arm) on the goal line before being cleared to safety.
Eastleigh took the lead on 37 minutes through excellent hold up play and vision from Ben Ngwa. The move started with a giant clearance from the skipper Sam Stannard and with Ngwa underneath it he managed to turn his marker before elegantly picking out strike partner ZACH GLASSPOOL with an unselfish square ball. The in form striker couldn't miss and didn't as he kept up his recent scoring spree to put the Spitfires ahead before the break.
The all important first goal gave Ian and Wayne's side a bit of momentum with Macs Sampays and Martin Beck coming very close in the space of a couple of minutes.
HALF TIME: Eastleigh Res 1-0 Waltham Forest
Eastleigh made just as good a start to the second half. MARTIN BECK got a deserved goal when he was chopped down in the box with the Forest defence failing to cope with the tricky winger. Having won the penalty himself, Beck confidently despatched his spot kick to the keeper's right with a neat finish to double the home sides lead.
First half scorer, Glasspool came agonisingly close when his effort was unlucky to smack against the post and not end up in the back of the net following some breathtaking skills from the talented young forward.
Waltham had a couple of chances, none more so than striker Jamie Haywood smashing against the cross bar and then the same player being thwarted yet again by another great save from Luke Douglas.
Sam Tannar between the sticks for Forest must also being recognised for keeping the score down as he prevented Eastleigh from extending their lead with Beck and Glasspool both coming close once more.
Into the last ten minutes of the game, BILLY BRICHAEN grabbed a consolation for the visitors with an exquisite strike out of the blue. With no one closing down, the Forest midfielder belted it towards goal with a sweet strike from way outside the box.
Eastleigh substitute BEN BOSLEY gave a warning within minutes of coming on showing that he meant business as he lashed the ball against the cross bar with good technique. Then, with three minutes to go Bosley made certain of the three points as he punished a defensive error with a good finish - credit to Liam Winzar for an excellent assist.
