Thurrock 4-1 Eastleigh

THURROCK 4-1 EASTLEIGH

SATURDAY 26th APRIL 2008
Blue Square South

Report by Ray Murphy

Thurrock wrecked Eastleigh’s Play Off dreams with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Eastleigh, as results elsewhere see Fisher Athletic and Braintree Town seal places in the top five.

Eastleigh started the game the brighter of the two sides with Chris Piper and Mark Marshall particularly threatening down the flanks, and the first chance was created by Piper but Ashley Vickers headed over the bar in the sixth minute and three minutes later, Piper again found space down the right but this time his cross was headed over by Andy Forbes.

Thurrock’s first attempt arrived on quarter of an hour after a spell of pressure Lee Flynn saw his final shot blocked. Three minutes later, Thurrock’s Supporters’ Player of the Year Che Stadhart met Kenny Clark’s long ball to beat Jason Matthews in the air but his effort rolled agonisingly wide of the open goal.

With Eastleigh struggling to penetrate the Thurrock back four, there were several long-range efforts causing Thurrock concern. Mark Marshall’s drive on twenty minutes was saved by Thurrock goalkeeper David Blackmore and a minute later after being set up by Forbes, Karl Murray’s thirty yard pile driver was clawed away by Blackmore as the keeper on loan from West Ham had to use all his six foot four inches to fly across his goal and produce an excellent save. As Eastleigh continued with the pressure Paul Sales saw a header from a Fitzroy Simpson corner saved by Blackmore then a dipping twenty-yard volley from Murray was inches over the bar.

In the 36th minute the deadlock was finally broken when Fola Orilonishe’s cross from the right was back headed home by Matt Bodkin.

Three minutes later and it was more heartache for Eastleigh. From an Eastleigh corner Thurrock broke with a four-man attack. Bai Mas Lettejallow fond Orilonishe on the overlap. His cross was half volleyed goal bound by Stadhart only to be denied allegedly by the hand of Anthony Riviere who was shown a straight red card. Up stepped David Bryant but the resulting spot kick was saved superbly by Matthews.

With the extra man, Thurrock began to dominate possession and both Flynn and Orilonishe had attempts saved by Matthews With a minute to go to the interval Bodkin slipped the ball in behind the Eastleigh defence for Stadhart to slip the ball over Matthews and into the net but Eastleigh were saved by an assistants flag for offside.

With the game in the second minute of first half stoppage time Thurrock did add their second, Bryant turned provider for Orilonishe who sidestepped Andy Harris before smashing the ball into the near post top corner from six yards.

Thurrock returned from the half time team talk with much of the same. In the forty seventh minute Flynn’s free kick inside the area for a back pass award was blocked by the Eastleigh defensive wall on the goal line, Bryant headed the loose ball over the bar. Two minutes later and Thurrock had added a third goal. Stadhart got his just deserves, heading home Bodkin’s cross.

As Eastleigh tried to repair the damage a minute later Piper’s low cross cum shot was pushed away by Blackmore but Murray could not force the ball home, then Forbes headed wide from another Piper cross.

Eastleigh made a triple change hoping to get back into the game, and in the sixty fourth minute substitute Steve Watts’ left foot shot from the edge of the eighteen-yard box found its way into the bottom corner of the net. Three minutes later David Hughes’ dipping shot went just over the bar.

Thurrock substitute Alex Read was given two good opportunities but failed to capitalise on the time and space he found himself in. Lettejallow also had a great opportunity but his close range shot was palmed out by Matthews for a corner.

Having returned from Newport the previous Monday with a 4-1 victory, Thurrock ensured that they dismissed another Play Off contender by the same margin as Stadhart’s eighty ninth minute through ball saw a scorching strike from Bodkin giving Matthews no chance for the fourth Thurrock goal.

With the game all but over, Thurrock pushed for a fifth and when Bodkin crossed to Stadhart, the front man could only volley high over the bar.

A bad afternoon for Eastleigh and a disappointing way to finish their season, but with a dismal three point haul from their final eighteen available Eastleigh slipped out of a play off place that they had occupied for the past ten weeks.

Match Report by Jamie Montigue

Starting out with a 4-3-3 formation with the in-form Joe Maxwell, Aaron Milburn and Scott Waters in attack, Eastleigh's second XI took a long time to get going this afternoon and were second best for the first twenty minutes.

It wasn't until the 32nd minute that the hosts conjured up their best move of the half with Milburn flicking the ball through for Waters who turned just wide of goal following a long kick up the park by goalkeeper Freddie Toomer.

There were signs enough from this point that the strong attacking force of Eastleigh would come to something with a couple of examples of neat interchange, though unfortuntely lacking the final product.

HALF TIME: Eastleigh 2nd XI 0-0 Burnham Res.

The second half saw the game come to life with the visitors striking the woodwork with a chipped cross in the opening stages.

Sam Longman was dismissed for a second yellow card just ten minutes in forcing the Spitfires to see the game out with ten men. As so often can be the case, the ten men of Eastleigh looked so much the better for it despite being numerically unadvantaged and from this point on it looked as though there would only be one winner.

Shortly after the hour mark the Burnham goalkeeper and captain, bravely denied Milburn from close range from a James Screen corner to keep the deadlock in tact.

Twenty minutes from time centre half Jason Sangha played an excellent ball down the line to pick out Joe Maxwell who lobbed the goalkeeper beautifully with an audacious chip only to see his shot clip the frame of the goal. This was the closest Eastleigh had come thus far and were very unfortunate not to be in front.

Five minutes later Maxwell came extremely close once more. This time James Screen played the ball in for Joe who hit it sweetly with his left foot but the shot flew narrowly over. Surely the luck was about to change sooner rather than later?

The onslaught continued with Scott Waters not too far away from goal with a shot from the right hand side, when a rare attack from Burnham resulted in a free kick high up the park and the ball floating onto the cross bar and safely behind for a goal kick.

Back at the opposite end, it was Eastleigh's turn to be denied by the woodwork, not for the first time in the game. James Screen's corner on the far side was a perfect inswinging delivery and almost went in direct from the flag kick and would have were it two inches lower.

In the closing stages of the game Maxwell had a good chance to steal a deserved winner but fired wide, the chance falling on his weaker foot. Then in injury time, Scott Waters' excellent pull back for Maxwell was thwarted by the goalkeeper at point blank range.

Beaten by the Saints but win at Thurrock would guarantee playoffs

ST. ALBANS 3-2 EASTLEIGH

SATURDAY 19th APRIL 2008
Blue Square South

By Ray Murphy

Eastleigh suffered their second successive odd goal in five defeat on their travels against a side that although hovering above the relegation zone had only suffered one defeat in their previous eight matches and picked up awards before the match for Blue Square South Manager Of The Month in Steve Castle and Player Of The Month in goalkeeper Paul Bastock. With other results on the day the picture for a play off position is now totally clear. A victory away at Thurrock on the final Saturday will guarantee Eastleigh a play off berth.

Eastleigh started brightly at St Albans. Andy Forbes' header from a Chris Piper cross on eight minutes was just wide and four minutes later Bastock saved a glancing Paul Sales header from Andy Harris’ long throw. On quarter of an hour an attempted clearance from Scott Cousins fell perfectly for Forbes but again his effort was just off target.

St Albans had their first chance on seventeen minutes, Luke Byles lost the ball in his own box allowing Paul Hakim a shot on goal but Jason Matthews was equal to the attempt. Three minutes later Paul Bruce laid the ball into the path of striker Akanni-Sunday Wasiu but his weak shot was easily smothered by Matthews.

As Eastleigh broke away at the opposite end former St Albans player Matt Hann was brought to the floor by centre back Ryan Frater and Eastleigh were awarded a penalty. Forbes despatched his penalty for his nineteenth Blue Square South goal of the season.

With twenty-three minutes played Hann should have doubled the Eastleigh score. Collecting a through ball from David Hughes, Hann slipped the ball past Bastock but the ball rolled the wrong side of the post. Sales laid the ball into the path of Hughes on thirty-four minutes; Hughes’ shot beat Bastock but again rolled just wide of the target. Five minutes before the interval Bruces’ free kick for St Albans bounced awkwardly in front of Matthews but the Eastleigh stopper grabbed the ball safely.

St Albans started the second period with a renewed vigour. Within the opening ten minutes of the half, Hakim had a long-range effort saved by Matthews, and then Lee Clarke turned a cross from Bradley Gray just wide. With sixty-one minutes played St Albans did net an equaliser. After being set up by Clarke, Gray curled a low left foot drive under the body of Matthews to nestle into the corner of the net. If that was distraught for Eastleigh, less than a minute later and matters got worse. Wasiu repeated the act making himself space in the area before planting a low drive down past Matthews to put St Albans in front.

As Eastleigh now tried to retain an equal footing in the game, Chris Piper's free kick was just off target before further disaster struck for Eastleigh in the seventy fourth minute. Seemingly having dealt with the danger, Matthews uncharacteristically got his feet entangled with the ball and the onrushing Wasiu took full advantage and rolled home his second goal of the afternoon.

A magnificent strike from Steve Watts cutting in from the left flank holding off a couple of challenges before firing a left foot shot from twenty five yards beyond Bastock gave Eastleigh hope for the remaining ten minutes. Two chances did arrive in the final minute. First Mark Marshall’s free kick fell for a free Watts header but he only managed to head the ball straight into the midriff of Bastock, then Marshall himself had an opportunity but his lack of composure saw the chance go begging.

So forty one league games played and it is all down to the last match of the season and a must win match at Thurrock.

2nd XI: Joe can't stop scoring!

After going 2-0 down at half time to Whyteleafe Reserves, Eastleigh fought back well with two goals from Joe Maxwell to change the game around.

15-year old goalkeeper Toomer came on in the second half and drew the plaudits making a couple of outstanding saves and looked confident throughout.

Maxwell continued his rich vein of goalscoring form with another brace this afternoon adding to the double he scored in the last reserves home game in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Hillingdon Borough.

Since then Eastleigh's second string played two away games in which they beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1, Maxwell getting both goals again! This was then followed by a heavy 3-0 defeat to Hayes & Yeading United Res. last weekend.

Ray Murphy: After the Marathon

Well it took a little longer than expected, Six hours six minutes and twenty nine seconds according to the Floras Marathon time clock, when the target apart from just finishing was between five and six hours.

But what a day, the atmosphere was absolutely electric. Over 35,000 runners and half a million people lining the streets of London cheering you on. The first ten miles were fine then after about twelve both my hamstrings really tightened and although stretching several times, they would not loosen and the second half of the marathon turned into a mere walk the course just to finish.

In addition to that just over £1500 so far has been raised for my chosen charity The Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The aim now I would love to go back next year, co I now know that I am sure I could touch the five hour mark.

A point closer to playoff reality but it's still tight at the top

EASTLEIGH 1-1 HAMPTON & RICHMOND BOROUGH

SATURDAY 12th APRIL 2008
Blue Square South

By Jamie Montigue

Great support once again

Hampton & Richmond Borough came into this game in fine form with four straight league wins to their name. The Beavers in third place and Eastleigh in fourth right behind them, this truly was a top of the table clash with so much riding on it as the race for a play off place heats up.

Karim El-Salahi

Without suspended centre half Ashley Vickers, Karim El-Salahi was recalled from relegated Sutton United and thrust straight back into a starting place to fill a defensive void. Warren McBean ended his loan spell with the Spitfires this week going in the opposite direction having scored four goals in his short stay.

Adam Everitt dropped to the bench allowing a starting place for David Hughes, the only other change from last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to league leaders Lewes saw Anthony Riviere missing through injury.

After a fairly dull opening to the game, the Spitfires took charge and looked to take the game to the visitors. The first opportunity saw excellent play from Forbes on the far touchline, beat his man before spraying a delightful pass into the middle for Peter Adeniyi to knock down. David Hughes arrived at the edge of the area but drove comfortably wide of goal.

Just prior to this, Hampton’s pacy striker Lawrence Yaku had got the better of Luke Byles with a casual nutmeg before Adeniyi could intervene with a superbly timed sliding tackle to prevent a pullback from a dangerous position to the right of goal.

In the 12th minute Paul Sales looked as though he was shoved in the back by Alan Inns, a foul which possibly merited a penalty kick. The referee allowed play to continue where Karl Murray was chopped down just outside the 18-yard box. Though very well placed, the man in black was uninterested in either shout to award Eastleigh a penalty or a free kick.

Kevin James

New signing Kevin James; who has created all three Spitfires goals in the last two games, his first two for the club, sent over a very good cross for Sales to touch on to Forbes whose half volley was well charged down by Orlando Jeffrey in the 17th minute.

A long kick from Jason Matthews picked out Andy Forbes and might have led to a goal were it not for the ball bouncing off of the Eastleigh top goalscorer’s shin for it to roll safely through to the goalkeeper Matt Lovett.

This sustained period of pressure from the hosts, one which saw the visitors camped in their own half, paid dividends when ANDY FORBES gave Ian Baird’s side a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. Sublime wing play from Peter Adeniyi saw the former Bromley midfielder turn the full back Graham Harper inside out to get to the byline where he delivered the perfect ball for Forbes to power home an excellent header.

Pete, it seemed, had the license to roam forward and by and large he caused the Hampton and Richmond back line many problems. His assist for the opening goal was delightful and it has to be said Eastleigh taking the lead was on the cards for some time.

Paul Sales dragged a shot comfortably wide of goal soon after with his weaker left foot following a surging run from Chris Piper, when out of nothing the visitors drew level. Ten minutes before the break a throw on from the left-hand side found FRANCIS QUARM in acres of space. Taking full advantage of the slack defending, he let the ball roll across his body before picking out the bottom left hand corner with an unstoppable drive to beat the despairing dive of Matthews.

David Hughes came close to restoring Eastleigh’s lead when he played a clever one-two with Forbes only to see his shot scramble through to Lovett as the challenge came in from Orlando Jeffrey at just the right moment.

Two late chances in the half came the way of Hampton & Richmond. Elliot Godfrey’s well placed through ball found Lawrence Yaku shrug off El-Salahi to get his shot away, which was well held by Matthews.

Yaku then had a shot deflected off Luke Byles for a corner kick. Eastleigh cleared their lines really well to break and start a counter attack where Karl Murray went alone with a sprint from well inside his own half right to the opposite end of the pitch. The tireless midfielder did extremely well to get into the penalty area where he was clearly pulled back. Not for the first time in the game the referee turned a blind eye and must have been the only person inside the Silverlake Stadium to have not seen the infringement.

HALF TIME: Eastleigh 1-1 Hampton & Richmond Borough

The second half saw Eastleigh dictating much of the proceedings and very unlucky not to have found a winner.

Two minutes in, skipper Andy Harris had a go from deep and wasn’t too far away with the chipped effort as Piper rolled the ball across to him.

Ian Hodges had got the wrong side of Byles in the 54th minute, as the Eastleigh defender let the ball run, unaware of the presence of Hodges lurking behind him who pounced on the loose ball but was thwarted by a good stop from Matthews.

A couple of minutes later Matthews was called into action again to deny Barrie Matthews’ drive from 25 yards that was always on the up and had to be watched right into the gloves.

Eastleigh stepped up a gear and came close to going 2-1 ahead. Peter Adeniyi made a good turn on the near side before crossing with his right foot. Andy Forbes headed the ball across goal with a back post header where the ball had to be cleared virtually off the line ahead of Paul Sales.

Another good ball from Adeniyi, from the left this time, was helped on by Sales for Forbes who shot narrowly wide of the post.

The Spitfires were very unlucky not to have the advantage at this point as their play merited. The attacks kept coming and Chris Piper was the next to be denied, at point blank range by Lovett who made a vital block at the feet of the on-charging Eastleigh player.

Chris Piper

Karim El-Salahi headed a Kevin James corner towards goal in the 70th minute but had his effort stopped by the man on the far post.

A rare chance for the visitors saw the flag stay down against Yaku who had broken away. The ball eventually came out to Graham Harper on the right hand side, whose cross-cum-shot was heading for the top corner that had Matthews back-pedalling. The former Weymouth stopper and new Eastleigh number one wasn’t about to be caught out by the attempt and calmly tipped over the bar.

The final ten minutes was about one side and one side only. It was all Eastleigh with Alan Devonshire’s troops firmly on the back foot.

Second half substitute Steve Watts who came on for Paul Sales, couldn’t quite turn the ball goalwards from Fitzroy Simpson’s free kick that Byles had flicked on perfectly.

Eight minutes from time Kevin James made way for Matt Hann. The former St. Albans winger’s first involvement saw Hann’s cross get a crucial touch from a Hampton & Richmond defender to take the ball away from Forbes who was poised to head home an otherwise certain winner.

The Beavers looked to have thrown away the points when a clumsy and reckless piece of defending from Ryan Lake on Karim El-Salahi seemed to have gifted Eastleigh a priceless penalty kick. The referee was not interested and both sides had to settle for a point.

Rooks edge narrow win

LEWES 3-2 EASTLEIGH

SATURDAY 5th APRIL 2008
Blue Square South

Report by Ray Murphy

Champions elect Lewes, took another step towards the Blue Square South title with this odd goal in five victory over Play Off chasing Eastleigh. With skipper Andy Harris having passed a late fitness test he took the role of centre back to cover the suspended Ashley Vickers, whilst Adam Everitt earned a recall at left back.

It was a cagey opening quarter to the game with both sides knowing the importance of the three points at stake for the afternoon’s fixture. There had been very few openings by the time Eastleigh notched the opening goal of the afternoon on fourteen minutes. Karl Murray intelligently laid the ball into the path of Anthony Riviere to evade a challenge before burying a low strike down past Lewes goalkeeper Michael Jordan from the edge of the box.

The Spitfires’ lead lasted only four minutes. A free kick from the Lewes left flank from Simon Wormull arrived at the far post for captain Stephen Robinson to place a firm header into the roof of the net for his second goal in two weeks (his only two of the season).

Murray had two half chances inside a minute to restore Eastleigh’s lead but Jordan saved the first attempt whilst the second flashed across the face of the Lewes goal. As the game started to open up, play switched to the opposite end where Lewes area attacking down their slope with the wind behind their backs. Luke Byles saw an attempted clearance hit Dale Binns in the back and fall invitingly for Matt Groves. Groves’ early shot was well saved by Jason Matthews.

With twenty-nine minutes played Lewes took the lead. Binns’ wind assisted cross-cum shot swerved onto the top of the Eastleigh bar and as the ball came back into play Paul Booth fired home the loose ball. The final attempt of the opening half fell for Chris Piper who exchanged roles at full back to a midfield berth with Riviere, but his long-range effort was off target.

Three minutes into the second period Peter Adeniyi returning to one of his former clubs saw a shot saved by Jordan. Kevin James has another attempt on goal that produced a double stop from the Lewes keeper. It was Eastleigh that were enjoying the majority of the possession for the second period. They deservedly netted an equaliser on sixty-seven minutes. James skipped past his defender on the right flank and sent a low cross into the area where Andy Forbes diverted the ball into the net.

At that time you would have given Eastleigh the advantage and the favourites tag to go on and win the game. Groves was clear on a Lewes breakaway but his lofted shot over Matthews carried no power. On seventy-two minutes the game started to turn against the Spitfires. Adam Everitt’s caution worthy challenge on Andrew Drury saw a melee of players on both sides. After all had calmed down, referee John Magill from Colchester after consultation with his assistant’s dismissed Adeniyi for alleged violent conduct.

Paul Sales saw a snap shot saved on seventy-nine minutes by Jordan and two minutes later Lewes grabbed what proved to be the deciding goal. Poor defensive play from Eastleigh never cleared a Lewes corner and Ian Simpenda had the easiest of chances to fire home a shot from inside the six-yard box. The final chance of the afternoon fell to Drury who curled a shot wide of the target but Eastleigh were left to reflect a week in which they had played three of the top side in the division and only had two points from the games to show for their efforts.

Six goal thriller, Maxwell grabs two to complete reserves comeback

SUBS: Keelan Sainsbury (on for Waters 4), Justin Hall (on for Screen 63), JasonBrookes (on for Doswell 78)

Match Report by Jamie Montigue

Joe Maxwell netted two second half goals as Eastleigh reserves came back from 3-1 down to mark a terrific comeback in a thoroughly entertaining game.

Sadly the Spitfires lost striker Scott Waters just four minutes into the game as he went down under a heavy challenge and had to be carried off, before being rushed to hospital for treatment to an open wound on his shin.

Keelan Sainsbury came on to replace Waters and Les Wallace moved into the attack where he was in fine form threatening the Hillingdon defence with his direct running and pace.

Eastleigh actually found the back of the net with just nine minutes on the clock as Wallace had a shot from the right spilled and parried kindly to Joe Maxwell who turned the ball home only for an offside decision to rule out the 'goal'.

The hosts kept plugging away with Wallace again being denied, this time the goalkeeper held the powerful effort from the edge of the area.

LES WALLACE deservedly got his name on the scoresheet in the 16th minute. His initial shot was charged down but the Australian made no mistake from the rebound as he poked the ball over the line from close range to give Eastleigh a 1-0 lead.

Sam Doswell came close to extending the advantage with a good header from a James Screen corner but was denied by a brilliant goalline clearance.

There was no let up as the attacks and chances kept coming from Eastleigh, Hillingdon were mere spectators. Maxwell turned the ball behind following a good low cross from Perry Mullins, and then was thwarted by a well placed defender on the goalline moments later in the 33rd minute.

The goalscorer Wallace played a great ball out to the right to find Mullins whose stinging shot was too hot to handle for the Hillingdon goalkeeper. Maxwell followed up with the rebound but was denied by a fine defensive header over the cross bar.

Having had so much pressure throughout the half it was disappointing to have let the lead slip and then fall behind all within the space of five minutes coming up to the end of the first half.

Equalising in the 38th minute with a simple tap in from a corner kick, Hillingdon went one better to go 2-1 ahead just two minutes before the break. A free kick from the left hand side was deflected past Wynn and into the net as Eastleigh could only sit back and watch all their good work come undone.

HALF TIME: Eastleigh 2nd XI 1-2 Hillingdon Borough Res.

Eastleigh had a chance to pull level three minutes into the second half when centre Cedric Ngakum’s long clearance bounce awkwardly for the Hillingdon defender allowing Wallace to get to the ball first and attempt to loop the ball over the keeper but didn’t quite execute it.

The visitors celebrated a third goal in the 54th minute, a goal which gave them a two-goal cushion and was a joy to watch whichever team you were supporting. The holding midfield player sprayed a pinpoint 35-yard pass across to the left to pick out his centre forward who did all the rest with a sensational finish from a tight angle to steer the ball past the stranded Wynn and into the top corner.

Those that might have written Eastleigh’s chances off at this point were proven wrong as the Sptifires dug deep to pull themselves back into the game.

On the hour Mullins’ through ball found Maxwell in space, the Eastleigh striker got his shot away though it deflected safely through to the keeper.

Two minutes later, Eastleigh had a breakthrough and reduced the deficit. Sam Longman delivered a quality free kick from the near side to pick out the run of Maxwell to perfection. MAXWELL finished clinically with an excellent header. 2-3.

JOE MAXWELL completed the fightback with his second of the game, the leveller almost a carbon copy of the goal five minutes earlier. It was the same combination with Longman again put another great ball into the area, where Maxwell stole in to glance a fine header into the back of the net.

This is how it stayed but either side could have won it from this point, in particular Eastleigh who had the ascendancy and looked the more likely to come out with three points.

A long kick from Wynn saw Maxwell underneath it, the two-goal striker in search of his hattrick, but this time he tamely headed the ball into the safety of the goalkeepers arms.

In the 73rd minute, Maxwell still might have capped his performance with three goals when he was left with a free header at the back post from a Perry Mullins free kick, but he headed narrowly wide.

Wallace worked the ball across the pitch from right to left with a good run before finding Doswell in an advanced position on the left flank. The Eastleigh full back drove the ball comfortably wide.

Into the last ten minutes, it was still all Eastleigh but they couldn’t quite find a deciding goal despite good attempts from Mullins and Wallace.

They will settle for the 3-3 scoreline however as it looked at one point that they were down and out and would have been were it not for their determination and character, which shone through to get themselves a well earned point.

All Square - Spitfires 1-1 Hawks

EASTLEIGH v HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE

TUESDAY 1st APRIL 2008
Blue Square South

Match report by Jamie Montigue, Photos kindly provided by Dave Haines

‘As big as it comes in Non League football’. That was the thoughts of Eastleigh’s co-assistant manager Paul Doswell ahead of this dramatic derby between two Hampshire rivals, the Spitfires and the Hawks, between whom there is certainly no love lost with all that has gone on before.

Ian Baird, on his birthday, took on his old charges Havant and Waterlooville, a side that the Spitfires have failed to win against in eight attempts. He handed a debut to new signing, 28-year-old Kevin James following his release from Blue Square Premier side Crawley Town and completing his move to the Silverlake Stadium just ahead of the March transfer deadline yesterday. David Hughes was rested and settled for a place on the bench, whilst Anthony Riviere came back from a knock he sustained in the 2-1 win over Newport a little over a week ago to replace the injured Andy Harris.

There were precious few chances in the opening stages as both sides began the encounter at a ferocious pace as can be expected with so much at stake in this contest, not least fighting out for a play-off place, but both sides seemed to cancel each other out early on.

A massive 1,255 piled into the ground to watch this one, and it was the excellent Eastleigh faithful, in particular those behind the goal, whose vocal support was second to none from start to finish setting a resembling atmosphere to the magnitude of the encounter and the teams involved.

Shaun Gale’s Havant provided the first scare as Eastleigh’s captain Anthony Riviere played a short back pass to his goalkeeper Jason Matthews. Luke Nightingale, who recently signed a two-year deal with the Hawks from Bognor Regis Town so nearly caught out the former Weymouth stopper applying good pressure.

A quarter of an hour played, Matt Hann sent a well placed cross in to the area looking for Andy Forbes, though Kevin Scriven claimed well to cut out the danger.

Two minutes later Paul Sales played the ball to Peter Adeniyi who in turn helped it on into the path of Forbes who took it on the volley firing just wide, the ball flying across goal like an arrow.

The visitors best opportunity of the half saw Craig Watkins strike the ball sweetly on the volley from the edge of the penalty area drawing a fantastic save out of Jason Matthews, who had to be at full stretch to keep it out.

A challenge from Paul Sales saw a few emotions spill over and produce the first real fireworks of an otherwise fair game up to this point. The Havant full back, Brett Poate made the most of Sales’ sliding challenge influencing the referee’s decision, which eventually (when the handbags had been put away!) resulted in a yellow card for Sales despite a fair attempt to play the ball and minimal contact on the player.

It didn’t take long for Sales to get his comeuppance as Neil Sharp went straight through the striker moments later, the Havant defender also being shown a yellow card.

Eastleigh began to take charge from 30 minutes onwards, beginning with a Kevin James cross from the right that saw a close-ranged shot from Forbes, roll safely through to Scriven.

Adeniyi was brought down 25 yards from goal but the referee played the advantage as Piper shot straight at Forbes.

Ten minutes before the break, Eastleigh seemingly had a very good shout for a penalty as towering centre half Ashley Vickers was shoved to the ground. Play continued, the referee not interested in the incident, with Andy Forbes having an effort deflected behind.

The hosts were on top at this point with lots of pressure. Matt Hann and Karl Murray both had shots well charged down as the Hawks defended well in numbers determined not to crack and concede a goal just before the break.

Riviere forced a corner in the 37th minute where Hann’s delivery was pushed behind by Scriven ahead of Byles.

At the opposite end, an excellent delivery from a corner on the far side by Poate forced a fine fingertip save from Matthews who turned the ball behind expertly.

Just a minute before the break Havant’s Rocky Baptiste was provided the best opportunity of the evening by a country mile but could not take it and was left kicking himself. Nightingale left the ball for Baptiste who had lots of time to just pick his spot but drilled well wide of goal and should have done an awful lot better for a player of his calibre.

HALF TIME: Eastleigh 0-0 Havant and Waterlooville

Shortly after the break, a pinpoint ball down the line from Luke Byles found Forbes on the right whose excellent ball in was met by a Hann header that was blocked initially. It came back out to Hann who ran at his marker before going down somewhat easily under a challenge from Wilkinson and in my opinion looking for the penalty.

Six minutes in, Chris Piper’s floated cross was precise and measured to find Kevin James in front of goal with a glorious chance to test Scriven with a free header. The debutant however didn’t connect as well as he would have liked. Unlucky for Eastleigh, a let off for Havant.

The visitors first chance of the half came from a Jay Smith pull back from the near touchline. Craig Watkins arrived at the near post but was under pressure and as a result unable to turn the ball home thanks to an important challenge from former Hawk Luke Byles.

Barely ten minutes of the second half up, Havant had an even better opportunity. Luke Nightingale was sent clear of the last defender, clean through down the middle but his floated chip was somewhat rushed and flew harmlessly over the cross bar with Matthews glued to his goalline.

Byles was again at the thick of it in the heart of the Eastleigh defence to charge down Jamie Collins’ shot from 18 yards, Watkins with the ball across as Havant forced a corner from which nothing materialised.

On the hour, Warren McBean replaced Matt Hann, forcing Andy Forbes to switch to the left of midfield.

Eastleigh suddenly were on the up once more with a flurry of chances. Paul Sales drew the corner playing the ball off the defender; Kevin James provided the delivery from which Vickers’ looping header left Scriven with a simple catch.

A poor, low and quickly taken drop kick from Scriven came back off the feet of one of his team-mates in a yellow shirt just 20 yards ahead of him. His defence caught unawares still trudging forward, the ball fell kindly for Forbes who looked to take full advantage but his lofted effort, looking to send the ball back over the head of the goalkeeper, came narrowly wide and may have even taken an all important touch from Gary Elphick who recovered from Scriven’s error to apply timely pressure.

Forbes only a minute later looked to have been obstructed in the penalty area having got the better of one marker, before being body-checked. Bewilderingly the referee penalised the Eastleigh striker awarding the foul in Havant’s favour when it could so easily have been given as a penalty kick.

Matthews was more than equal to a low free kick from Poate with the game entering it’s final third. The Eastleigh goalkeeper found Sales route one style, with a long kick. Sales combined with Adeniyi to good effect getting the ball back and finding himself one on one with Scriven only to shoot weakly and too close to the keeper with his left foot. A glorious opportunity.

Then, in the 76th minute the deadlock was broken. Gavin McCallum who had not long come off the bench, made an immediate impact with the perfect cross from the left hand side to find ROCKY BAPTISTE in the centre. Baptiste made no mistake from close range with a powerful header leaving Matthews no chance, though Eastleigh may have had a case in suggesting suspicions of offside.

Havant were sent into ruptures having taken the lead, but Eastleigh deservedly came back into the game showing good character to force a dramatic equaliser.

Seven minutes from time, a direct ball into the box was poked to the right by Kevin James for PAUL SALES to pick out the top corner with a crisp drive much to the delight of the Eastleigh faithful, who simply erupted.

Baird’s men might have won it and it looked like they had from the unlikely source of Ashley Vickers in the 86th minute. The no-nonsense defender brought the ball down showing great touch, excellent composure and the technique of an international striker to volley towards goal. Heading for the top corner, the fine effort came so agonisingly close and deserved to be the winning goal but it was not to be as it ended all square.
