Eastleigh brought their recent disappointing run of form of one draw and five defeats from their previous six matches to a conclusion with this victory over Welling United, who themselves still had a chance of making the play off places in the division.

There was the pleasing sight of Neil Sharp returning to the first team starting role of central defender for the first time for thirteen months following his recovery from illness. The rest of the side remained from the one that had lost their Easter Monday game with Woking. The hosts Welling United had also had a pointless Easter period with two single goal defeats both against fellow play off sides and showed five changes from the sides that had played in those games for the club.

The first half chance of the game fell on nine minutes when striker Jake Hobbs fired a shot wide of the target. Eastleigh had started the better of the two sides and went ahead on thirteen minutes. Brett Poate played out wide a free kick into the path of Tony Taggart who drove a low cross into the area where Richard Gillespie reacted first to turn the ball home for his seventeenth goal of the season.

Eastleigh should have added to their score before they did so as Taggart had a shot saved by Charlie Mitten on nineteen minutes then eight minutes later Shaun McAuley’s free kick was tipped over the bar by the keeper. Ross Bottomley could not get enough power on his header from Taggart’s corner on the half hour.

A second Eastleigh goal did arrive on thirty-four minutes. Taggart’s free kick into the near post saw Bottomley arrive to glance a header beyond Mitten. Three minutes later Bottomley had another chance to add to the score but fired his shot wide.

Welling United started the second period playing with more endeavour. Two minutes after the restart Loui Fazakerley whipped a ball across the six-yard box and Lee Clarke just failed to reach the ball at the far post. Welling though did reduce the arrears on fifty-four minutes. A Welling corner was only half cleared by the Eastleigh defence which allowed the home side’s player-manager Jamie Day to play the ball back into the area where Clarke turned the ball low down past Jason Matthews.

After a brief flurry from Welling; though they showed little in trying to penetrate the Eastleigh defence, Gillespie had a couple of chances to increase Eastleigh’s advantage whilst Matthews was not forced into making any saves worthwhile during the rest of the game.

In the final minute of the game Taggart delivered a challenge on Welling defender Graeme Andrews that saw referee Jake Hillier produce a straight red card to the midfielder. There was another chance in stoppage time for Eastleigh substitute Sam Butler who produced a low left foot drive that was pushed away by Mitten.

Eastleigh now have a home game in midweek against Dorchester where they must now end their run of six consecutive home games without a victory.
