EASTLEIGH V GLOUCESTER CITY SATURDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER 2006 FA CUP SPONSORED BY E.ON 2ND QUALIFYING ROUND A typical FA Cup classic watched by over 400 at the Silverlake Stadium this afternoon saw a 2-0 deficit turned into a 3-2 win in what was a brilliant end to the tie. Gloucester took the lead through a dubious first half penalty after twenty minutes and then doubled their lead mid-way through the second half. Eastleigh at this point looked dead and buried but amazingly fought back with three superb goals. Andy Forbes gave the Spitfires a glimmer of hope just two minutes after Paul Doswell’s side fell further behind. Incredibly Eastleigh pulled level just half a minute later when Jamie Brown netted his first for the club. The comeback was complete on 79 minutes when Forbes scored once more as Eastleigh finish on a high and cruise into the next round of the cup. Ex-pros Matt Bound and Paul Musselwhite have both left Eastleigh after their stay at the Silverlake Stadium has come to an abrupt and premature end. Last year's captain of Conference South Champions Weymouth, Bound has left with just 11 games of the season gone. Meanwhile former Scunthorpe goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite who made over 600 football league appearances has also on his way out. In the light of Bound's departure, Steve West from Leyton has been snapped up. He is 33 years old and can play either as a centre back or a striker. His previous clubs include Dagenham & Redbridge, Grays, Woking and Hornchurch. Having already appeared for Leyton in the FA Cup this year he is ineligible to play for Eastleigh in tomorrow's match against Gloucester as Steve is cup tied. There is speculation that Farnborough goalkeeper Kevin Scriven, 22, could be brought in as a replacement for Musselwhite. In the second minute of the game goalkeeper Joe Morrison appeared very hesitant and failed to deal with a routine catch as the ball bounced over his head, and Sutton were denied by a good clearance. Eastleigh's Sam Stannard, who has now returned to full fitness, had a header that cleared the stand from a Lee O'Connell left wing delivery early on. With striker Ben Ngwa going to university at Bristol, Eastleigh have taken on a very able replacement in Leroy Swaby. FA CUP 2ND ROUND - 30th September - Home at the Silverlake Stadium: Eastleigh v Gloucester City After last years disapointment in the same competition with a heavy defeat away to Havant and Waterlooville in the replay after a 0-0 draw at home, Eastleigh will be looking to emulate Yeading's performance of a couple of years back where they played against Newcastle United. A good cup run with no doubt build confidence, which in turn would be a boost for the league.

Report by Jamie Montigue 16th September 2006 Conference South After playing arguably their best football of the season yet at Salisbury on Tuesday night, the Spitfires despite losing in the derby match followed the excellent performance up with a 1-1 draw today at the Silverlake Stadium. Eastleigh dominated the opening stage of the game but somehow fell behind in the 22nd minute through a Steve Harper goal. Thankfully Wayne Purser’s equaliser just after the restart meant Paul Doswell’s side left the Silverlake Stadium with a point. New signing Jamie Brown made his home debut for the club along with on loan Weymouth midfielder Andy Harris, and both players were very impressive from start to finish. Despite playing well early on, Eastleigh had a couple of scares with Matt Bound heading only inches over his own cross bar and then in the 7th minute a Tarkan Mustafa deflected shot was turned high and wide of Wayne Shaw’s goal from close range. Jefferson Louis signed a one year contract with Eastleigh during the summer and it was thought he could be the answer to the striker crisis at the club. The former Oxford United striker was suspended for the first three games of the season and didn't really impress until his 89th minute equaliser at Braintree Town. It has been reported that Doswell was not happy with the players attitude and the fact that he was not turning up at training. The news of Louis leaving Eastleigh alerted Havant boss Ian Baird, however the striker whose contract has been terminated, has now signed for Yeading.

Despite Salisbury being two men down in the second half, the Spitfires couldn't find a way through a nine man City side in what was a heated derby match. Former Spitfire Robbie Matthews forced a corner in the 80th minute and from it Tim Bond bundled home a Luke Prince cross to dismiss Eastleigh to a woeful defeat. Hot shot Matt Tubbs saw red for two bookable offences and ex-Saint Tommy Widdrington also had an early shower after a late challenge. (Left: Jamie Brown, Right: Andy Harris) Former Dorchester midfielder/striker Jamie Brown has signed for Eastleigh Liam Green going in the opposite direction where he will spend two months on loan, hopefully picking up valuable first team football. Brown spent five seasons at the Avenue Stadium scoring 34 goals in 216 games. The 25 year old previously played for BAT and was born in Southampton. Meanwhile Weymouth midfielder Andy Harris, 29 has also joined the ranks on a one month loan deal. In other player news, striker Dave Town has been released from his Spitfires contract and is now a free agent. Report by Jamie Montigue 9th September 2006 Conference South The Spitfires are finally back to winning ways, after Brian Dutton’s 6th minute goal proved to be the winner. Despite the ever-growing injury list, including captain Danny Smith who was missing today, Eastleigh showed exactly the kind of character needed to get the three points and should they win at Salisbury on Tuesday night things would be looking a lot more comfortable. Eastleigh’s first attack on Sutton’s goal led to the only goal of the game. Only 6 minutes of the game had been played when Darren Wheeler’s run from the right saw the tricky winger cut inside and pick out Ian Oliver in space in the area, who miss-hit a shot at goal. However, this worked in Eastleigh’s favour as it sat up perfectly for another former Weymouth midfielder, BRIAN DUTTON, who headed the ball home superbly from six yards to round off an excellent move. The striker has played for Peterborough, Hornchurch, QPR, Barnet and Leyton Orient. In the Terra's promotion campaign he missed a huge part of the season due to an eye injury.

Report by Ray Murphy 2nd September 2006 Conference South Jefferson Louis grabbed an 90th minute equaliser to cancel out an early Braintree goal. Following a run of four successive defeats, it was a somewhat nervous looking Eastleigh side that took the field for a one o’clock kick off in deepest rural Essex on Saturday. Francis Benali returned to the side from injury, Ian Oliver was moved forward into a midfield role on the left hand side and a debut for Wayne Purser, a striker signed on a month’s loan from Weymouth. The start could not have been worse either. On ten minutes Eastleigh found themselves a goal behind. A long free kick from deep inside his own half by Billy Burgess landed in between Matt Bound And Paul Musselwhite.
