Match Report by Jamie Montigue

On a horrible, wet and windy afternoon - awful conditions for a game of football, Eastleigh's 2nd team were up against a very competitive Tooting and Mitcham side today at the Silverlake Stadium.

After an early free kick from Phil Cousins flying narrowly over the cross bar on seven minutes, it was the visitors who took charge and indeed, the visitors who broke the deadlock with an eighteenth minute goal.

The excellent Dean Hamlin who controlled the game exceptionally well for Tooting in the centre of the park, played one of many delightful passes over the top to carve an opening, exploit the Eastleigh defence and make the very most out of forward Henry Darko's frightening pace.

Scorer of 49 goals last campaign, the pacy forward beat the offside trap, escaped the attentions of Andy Puckett before cooly slotting home past Andy Wynn.

Eastleigh's bleak performance was brightened up by the goal updates from the Cressing Road Stadium where the first team were taking on Braintree (two first half goals from Danny Smith and Steve Watts secured a tremendous first away win of the season for David Hughes' men.)

Despite Adam Roberts' best efforts, one of the few bright sparks for the Spitfires, there was precious little to cheer about for the home side with no end product up front in particular.

One of the trialist centre forward's was brought off prematurely and headed straight for the tunnel as Nathan Lynch took to the field as his replacement.

The half coming to a close, Tooting doubled their advantage with another long ball causing problems for the Eastleigh back line.

Henry Darko shrugged off a challenge from Eastleigh skipper Scott Gilham with relative ease before netting his second of the game with another precise finish.

Struggling to cope with the conditions, the direct play and sheer pace that they were up against, Eastleigh ended the half very nearly conceding a third.

HALF TIME: Eastleigh Res. 0-2 Tooting & Mitcham Res.

Forcing an early corner, Eastleigh showed their intent to try and find a way back into the game with Andy Puckett meeting Roberts' delivery to head behind, however being on the front foot was not to last.

Andy Wynn was forced to make a diving save to keep out a Hamlin free kick, before on the hour, Eastleigh found themselves three goals down.

A pinpoint pass from Hamlin, picked out the run of the Tooting and Mitcham number 9 who did all the rest to fire home before celebrating in true style.

Having gone 3-0 down now, the home side temporarily perked up. TJ McClory-Cuthbertson tried his luck from all of 30 yards with a stinging piledriver, keeping the ball out, albeit not knowing too much about it, the vistitors goalkeeper found himself in the way of the shot to deny the former Portsmouth youngster.

An excellent passing move moments later, was rounded off with the finish to match as Eastleigh's best player of the afternoon, ADAM ROBERTS, found the back of the net with a curling effort from the edge of the area to pull a goal back in the 73rd minute.

With time running out, McClory-Cuthbertson had another long range effort thwarted, this time tipped around the post before the game was well and truly wrapped up in the dieing stages.

Yet another through ball from the visitors, saw Henry Darko once again lose his man, Andy Puckett, with electric pace before completing a fine hattrick with a lobbed finish over the advancing Wynn.

A dismal start to the season for Eastleigh's youngsters, but things can only get better.

FULL TIME: Eastleigh 1-4 Tooting & Mitcham

I think the trialist who played up front called Andre was not bad but he did not really get the service. Give him a couple of games and i think he will be a gem for the second team. Also think the second team need some new faces. Looks like a lot of the players in the team did not want it and are way too comfortable. Bring in some new blood.

I think the 2 trialist who played up front I think there names are Andre Tawio And Aaron Remikie was great and looked very fresh with, Andres Pace and Aarons skillfull feet, I think they can help the 2nd team but they both should be looking to get a contract with the 1st team as bits of there play was at a high standard.
Phil in the centere of the park was great but as i have saw him play before i think it just was not his day.
I agree that they need some new blood.
