No shame in defeat for Eastleigh youngsters
EASTLEIGH v HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE
MONDAY 24th JANUARY 2011
Hampshire Senior Cup
Report by Ray Murphy
This much delayed Hampshire Senior Cup Third Round tie finally took place at the sixth attempt with the fixture having been reverted to the home of Eastleigh following three attempts to play the fixture at the drawn home side Havant & Waterlooville - who were thwarted by the weather.
The two Blue Square Bet Southern Division sides fielded much different teams than one would normally associate too when these sides meet, Eastleigh with a league fixture away at St Albans due some twenty-four hours later whilst the visitors kept to their more normal league line up showing just three changes from the side that had defeated Boreham Wood in the league the previous Saturday.
Jason Matthews was given a rare outing in goal whilst Brett Poate was in the side to continue his return from injury, taking a central midfield role. Apart from the two recognised Eastleigh first team squad members the rest of the squad had a youthful look to them.
Havant started the game in the ascendancy with Mustafa Tiryaki sending a weak shot wide of the target from an early corner. From another quickly taken corner Ian Selley saw a shot saved by Matthews. In reply, Eastleigh saw Lewis Robinson (having returned from his loan spell with Romsey Town) firing a shot over the bar following a poor Havant defensive clearance. Tiryaki was again in the thick of the action on the end of a Sam Pearce free kick, which was saved by Matthews.
Eastleigh though went ahead on thirteen minutes. Liam Robinson and Liam Hibberd were involved in some neat play on the left flank with the ball being played to Sam Wilson, the seventeen-year-old adjusted his feet inside the area before curling a shot past the fully stretched Havant & Waterlooville goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore into the net.
The goal suddenly made the visitors more alert. Guiseppe Sole was sent through on goal four minutes later but his rising shot was not enough to deceive Matthews. On twenty-four minutes a dipping shot from Hibberd had Ashmore back pedalling to turn the effort over the bar.
Eastleigh were dealt a cruel blow with the equalising goal on twenty-eight minutes. Jon McDonald’s long throw into the Eastleigh area skimmed off the back of the head of Eastleigh centre back Charlie Bailey, a member of the Havant & Waterlooville Academy side, the header looping over the top of Matthews into the net. The visitors were now looking more threatening though the Eastleigh side were giving a good account of themselves. On thirty-four minutes following another McDonald long throw, Sole saw another shot saved by Matthews, but both sides arrived at the interval on equal terms.
Havant & Waterlooville were enforced into a half time substitution when Wes Fogden replaced the injured Selley and Fogden was to be a major part of the second period. Pearce had already fired a Tiryaki cross wide in the second period before Havant & Waterlooville took the lead on fifty minutes. Capitalising on a misplaced Bailey pass, Fogden delicately lifted the ball over the advancing Matthews to bounce into the net.
Two minutes later the Havant advantage was two goals, Sole unmarked at the far post controlling a Jake Newton cross on his chest before firing low past Matthews. Matthews denied Sole with another shot on the hour whilst Fogden also saw a shot saved by Matthews as the visitors took control of the game.
A fourth goal arrived on eighty-two minutes. Sole racing beyond a static Eastleigh defence took the ball round Matthews before slotting home; whilst in the final minute Havant & Waterlooville skipper Ian Simpenda tucked home a fifth for the evening.
Havant & Waterlooville now entertain Winchester City in the Quarter Final of the competition whilst Eastleigh yet again fail to make an impression on the county senior competition, though on this performance there could well be some new talent arising from the Eastleigh youth ranks.
