Eastleigh v Havant & Waterlooville - Match Preview
Match Preview by Kieran James
Ian Baird’s Spitfires will look to start 2012 with a win over Hampshire rivals Havant & Waterlooville on New Years Day tomorrow at the Silverlake Stadium (3pm kick off).
The two teams met on Boxing day in a very disappointing scrappy encounter at West Leigh Park which saw no goals.
Very few chances were created from both sides and it was Jamie Brown who came closest with a header moments before he got substituted in the 24th minute after receiving a yellow card early in the game and being replaced as a precaution.
The game needed a goal to settle things, however with very few chances created - both keepers Jack Dovey and Lyall Beasley spent most of the time watching the match with very little to do.
Graeme Montgomery came the closest to putting the Spitfires in the lead but his low driven shot went narrowly past the post after evading his marker.
Captain Tom Jordan received a red card after receiving two yellow cards moments after Jamie Slabber had a penalty appeal turned down by referee Adrian Quelch.
The match finished 0-0 which meant it was the fourth time in a row that Eastleigh have come away with a point from West Leigh Park in a game that could easily be forgotten by both teams.
The last time this derby was played at the Silverlake Stadium, the Spitfires beat The Hawks with a 4-2 win last season.
In other news Eastleigh’s new mystery striker was supposed to be Jason Prior from Ryman Division One South (two leagues below Eastleigh) outfit Bognor Regis, however the striker who netted 95 goals in 124 appearances for Bognor has landed a trial with Premiership side Newcastle United.
Both Eastleigh and Havant & Waterlooville supporters will also be playing each other tomorrow at 1pm before the main event. You can watch the supporters game on the astro pitch at Eastleigh Football Club so come and show your support for the fans who are playing in this match.
Here's hoping for a big three points to start 2012 as we mean to go on.
Happy New Year!
COME ON YOU SPITFIRES!
