Eastleigh v Thurrock - Match Preview

Match Preview by Kieran James
Ian Baird’s Spitfires will look to get back to winning ways after their four match unbeaten run in the league came to an end last Saturday against first placed Woking.

The Spitfires put in a great performance last week at The Kingfield Stadium however they were somehow on the wrong end of a 1-0 defeat courtesy of a Wayne Gray strike that looked offside.

Eastleigh had their chances and dominated the second half after conceding but couldn't quite find the equaliser they deserved with Woking hanging on at the end. The only thing missing was making it count in the final third.

The Spitfires will be looking to exciting new signing Damian Scannell to cause bottom of the table Thurrock problems tomorrow on his return to the club since departing in January 2008 for Southend United.

The Fleet have only won three out of their eighteen games this season in the league, all of which have been away from home.

Thurrock’s last win in the league came last month against 20th-placed Hampton & Richmond Borough where they 0-2 with Lee Boylan scoring a brace.

The last game Thurrock played was a 1-2 defeat to 21st-placed Staines Town in the league with Jamie Guy scoring The Fleet’s only goal in that match.

However it's not all doom and gloom at Ship Lane. After the departure of manager Robert Garvey, joint caretaker managers Lee Goodwin, Grant Gordon and Paul Joynes pulled off six new signings.

Two of the new arrivals are former Peterborough United left back and Sierra Leone international Ahmed Deen and former Tottenham Hotspurs midfielder and Under 17s England International Jamie Davies.

Ex-Dover Athletic midfielder Luke I’Anson, former Fulham and Dover Athletic defender Nathan Ashton, former Southend United and Arsenal right back Anthony Furlonge and former Cambridge United defender Blaine Hudson all signed for the Essex club this week.

The last time these two teams played was in October this season where Eastleigh ran out 1-3 winners at Ship Lane.

Jamie Slabber put the Spitfires 0-1 up in the 26th minute; The Spitfires looked to be in clear sailing only for Drewe Broughton to equalise for the home side.

In the 89th minute Thurrock’s goalkeeper David Hughes had a moment to forget after scoring a bizarre own goal for his side.

Jamie Slabber then secured all three points to make it 1-3 to The Spitfires.

The last time these two teams played at The Silverlake Stadium was in April last season where The Spitfires claimed all three points.

Chris Holland (now at Havant & Waterlooville) put The Spitfires in the lead with an unlikely right foot strike following a free kick.

Captain Tom Jordan doubled Eastleigh’s lead when Tony Taggart (now at Sutton United) crossed the ball in for Jordan to poke the ball past goalkeeper Joe Woolley.

Lee Boylan got one back for the visitors when his shot beat Jason Matthews (now at Bath City) to halve Eastleigh’s lead.

Jamie Brown had his shot saved only for Tony Taggart to pounce on the rebound and score a half volley for Eastleigh to claim all three points.

This result was considerably better than the one two seasons ago when Thurrock thrashed Eastleigh 2-8 at The Silverlake Stadium.

Eastleigh will have to play without the likes of Ian Herring, Jamie Slabber and Danny Smith who are all suspended for this game.

This is going to be a great game to watch so come on down to The Silverlake Stadium and roar on those Spitfires!

COME ON YOU SPITFIRES!
