Eastleigh Reserves Promoted

Eastleigh Res. 3-0 Horley Town
SUBURBAN SOUTH LEAGUE - 22/04/2006

LINE UP: Lee Cozens, Craig Martin (Gilham), Sam Stannard, Dan Brunnen, Ryan Woodford (c), Toure Mamadouba (Weston), Dan Smith, Chris Hall, Zach Glasspool (Simpson), Brett Williams, Scott Vidler.

SUBS: Ben Simpson, Andy Weston, Scott Gilham

1. Eastleigh's early pressure resulted in them taking the lead. Dan Smith won a free kick on the right flank which Scott Vidler played deep to the back post where Ryan Woodford headered the ball against a Horley player to gain a corner. From it Dan Smith and Toure Mamadouba linked up well to set up BRETT WILLIAMS who showed a good strikers instinct to cooly flick the ball home with the outside of his boot from six yards out. 1-0. This was a great start bearing in mind Eastleigh only needed a point to gain promotion.

18. The only chance the visitors had was a fairly speculative effort which nearly caught Eastleigh keeper Lee Cozens off guard. The ball sat up nicely for Russell Farrow, the Horley skipper, and his long distance lob went just wide of goal.

22. Eastleigh put the ball in the back of the net when Zach Glasspool latched on to a good ball down the line before finishing exquisitely - however the goal was ruled out for offside although the decision seemed harsh as it appeared Zach was on side.

31. Glasspool was denied another goal this time due to good defending as his turn and shot resulted in an Eastleigh corner. Toure Mamadouba delivered from the left to pick out Glasspool who leapt well and got in a great downward header but with the keeper beaten their full back was well placed to block the effort and deflect it to safety.

43. Moments before half time the home side doubled their advantage. A Chris Hall cross from the left hand side saw Brett Williams get up well to challenge the Horley keeper and this pressure led to the Myles Massiah (the Horley keeper) dropping the ball and gifting DAN SMITH a simple tap in. 2-0.

46. It should have been 3-0 going into the break as Scott Vidler wasted a good chance when his volley sailed over the cross bar after good play from Dan Smith to pick out the tall winger. However Eastleigh were on top and looking very comfortable after a good first 45.

Half Time: Eastleigh Res. 2-0 Horley Town

53. The promotion seeking Eastleigh started the second half in the same manner that they had played in the first. Mo played the ball to Glasspool who was in acres of space on the right hand side and his shot was saved by the keeper when really he probably should have done better considering his goal scoring form.

55. On the attack again. Mo sprayed the ball out wide, Glasspool dummied the ball and left it for Smith who struck the ball very sweetly with his first time effort however Massiah was equal to the shot.

57. The early spell of pressure in the second half paid off as Eastleigh made it 3-0. Vidler crossed the ball from the byline to pick out BRETT WILLIAMS who turned the ball in well from about a yard for his second goal of the game. This goal pretty much settled the win and it was fairly straightforward and easygoing from here as Horley rarely threatened.

89. The two goal striker Williams then turned provider for the substitute Ben Simpson. Williams threaded a good ball through to find Simpson who made a great run down the right to get in behind the defence and he did everything right however his shot came back off the post as the keeper closed down well to narrow the angle.

FULL TIME: Eastleigh Res. 3-0 Horley Town

This win now ensures Eastleigh have sealed promotion which is a fantastic achievement considering a number of players have been part of the first team for large parts of the season. Well done to all the players and especially Ian Knight and Wayne Mew for the excellent job they have done.

IAN KNIGHT's Match Reaction

The Reserve Team manager feels that although his side have won promotion they have still got half of the battle to complete. He said "We have got 50% of the job done today, but we still have 50% to finish. When we play Tonbridge we want to win so we can go up as Champions. The job is only half done."

RYAN WOODFORD's Match Reaction

The captain was also delighted with promotion. He said. "This is a good achievement for us. I am really proud of the players. Hopefully we will go up as champions after winning todays game. We have had some excellent results this season with an everchanging squad which has made things difficult but we have done well."
