Eastleigh Reserves lose to Tooting

EASTLEIGH RESERVES 0-2 TOOTING & MITCHAM
SUBURBAN LEAGUE

Match Report by Richard Montigue

A young Eastleigh side (mainly under 18’s) lined up against a strong Tooting and Mitcham side in bad conditions with a strong wind and a heavy pitch.

Eastleigh were kicking into the wind and soon found themselves 1-0 down, when Tooting took the lead on five minutes.

Eastleigh battled hard in the conditions and on 10 minutes a good cross from Ryan Long was met by left-winger Dan Smith who forced a good save from the Tooting goalkeeper.

Eastleigh worked hard for the rest of the half keeping the opposition at bay but not really creating many chances themselves, although Zach Glasspool had a free kick just before half time.

HALF TIME: Eastleigh Reserves 0-1 Tooting & Mitcham

In the second half Eastleigh had the wind behind them, but had to make changes on 55 minutes when the injured Ben Ngwa was replaced. Max Sampays moved up front and then on 57 minutes Dan Smith had to come off with a hamstring injury.

Just after these changes, Tooting and Mitcham had a free kick on the edge of the area and their left back floated the ball into the top left hand corner of the net out of Cozens’ reach.

In the 75th minute, Eastleigh had to reshuffle again when Zach Glasspool was replaced by Scott Gilham. Gilham went to left back, Jordan Hamilton moved into midfield and Ryan Long moved upfront alongside Sampays.

The play was end to end with the conditions playing a big part in the game.

Eastleigh had a chance with five minutes to go but Ryan Woodford’s free kick flew wide. Three minutes later Craig Cansdale's free kick went just wide and in the end Tooting and Mitcham ran out 2-0 winners perhaps adapting to the wind and pitch slightly better than Eastleigh.
