Eastleigh reserves, containing eight first team players took all three points in what was their first win since being promoted last season.
Former Spitfires striker, Mark Peters struck the upright for the home side only four minutes into the game with a swerving effort.
Darren Wheeler shone at this level of football last night with his burning pace being a highlight of the first half. The former Weymouth man could have had at least a hattrick by half time with a number of efforts coming close. Before his opening goal just before half time, Wheeler in the 11th minute left the Basingstoke right back for dead before getting into the box and seeing a chipped effort fly back off the crossbar.
Two minutes later, a quickly distributed kick up field by Wayne Shaw found Ashford on the left wing who played an inch perfect diagonal ball for Wheeler, who again had a great chance to score. Wheeler flicked the ball over the head of his marker before lashing a volley narrowly over the cross bar.
Mid-way through the half, the assistant referee pulled up with an injury and so qualified referee Jamie Montigue was pushed forward to make a brief appearance as his replacement, before a fully kitted out alternative arrived four minutes later!
Just before the half hour mark, Ashford and Wheeler linked up once more. This time Wheeler sprinted through on goal hitting the post, when he perhaps should have done a bit better.
Eastleigh were increasingly looking good going forwards and excellent build up play involving Ben Ngwa and Darren Wheeler teed up Liam Green who pulled the trigger from 25 yards but hit the ball straight at the keeper.
The pressure from the visitors was almost constant and soon a cross from Liam Winzar saw a Brian Dutton header fly just wide of the post.
A rare chance from Basingstoke saw Mark Peters try his luck from the half way line spotting Shaw off his goal line but in the end it was comfortably wide.
Wayne Mew's sides dominance in possession finally paid off and it was fourth time lucky for first team regular Darren Wheeler. A poorly executed back pass allowed the nippy winger in to round the keeper before applying an easy finish into an empty net for Eastleigh to take a deserved lead.
Moments before the half time whistle, a fifth opportunity came Wheeler's way. Ben Ngwa played the ball out wide to Sayem Kabir who pushed the ball through and with the flag staying down, Wheeler poked his effort wide.
HALF TIME: Basingstoke Res. 0-1 Eastleigh Res.
The only change at half time for Eastleigh was Macs Sampays replacing the injured Ben Ngwa. This meant Sayem Kabir being pushed up front and Sampays slotting in down the right of midfield.
Eastleigh had the worst possible start to the second forty five with a very shaky look about them. Barely 40 seconds had been played when captain Adam James needlessly brought down a Basingstoke forward, causing a penalty kick. Thorne sent Shaw the wrong way nestling the ball in the bottom right hand corner to grab the equaliser.
After barely putting a foot wrong in the first half, Adam James had another moment to forget three minutes later when he was easily turned by Peters who thumped the ball straight at the post.
In the 57th minute Eastleigh took a 1-2 lead through Ryan Ashford. Sayem Kabir played the ball down the right touchline for Sampays who rolled the ball across the goal area. Brian Dutton dummied the ball for Ashford who kept his cool side footing the ball home from 15 yards.
Having restored the lead, Eastleigh gave goal scorers Wheeler and Ashford a rest with the trialist Phil Cousens coming on along with Paul Fagg.
Shaw had to be on his guard all of a sudden, firstly as James' missed header led to a Basingtoke forward flicking the ball up to try and get past Shaw who had got to the edge of his area well to snuff out the danger with a good catch. With twelve minutes to go, another excellent stop by Shaw denied Peters at point blank range.
Eastleigh finally sealed the win with an 81st minute strike from Macs Sampays. Basingstoke's corner from the right was quickly cleared by Eastleigh with Kabir starting the counter attack by bringing the ball away and sending Sampays through with a lofted pass. The young midfielder still had some work to do, but a combination of pace, strength and superb technique saw Sampays lob the keeper with a delightful finish for goal number 3.
There was time for two more Eastleigh attempts that fell for Liam Green but nothing came of them as a vastly improved performance (with the help of some first team players) saw them through to a thoroughly deserved victory.
