Report by Ray Murphy
Eastleigh cruised to a landslide 5-0 victory away to Staines Town this afternoon, inspired by a remarkable four goals in the first half from leading goal scorer Jamie Slabber.
The Spitfires led by four goals at the break, which Shaun McAuley added to in the second half to secure another impressive three points.
Ian Baird's side have moved above Woking into seventh place, just behind Dover on goal difference. Eastleigh are now just two points behind 5th-placed Chelmsford City but still have two games in hand as the race for a play-off finish continues.
The five cyclists, Rhonda Thomas, Ryan Page, Chris Blake, Mark Blake and Ian Richardson completed their 57-mile sponsored bike ride to Staines FC - and were richly rewarded by their team who made it all worthwhile with a 5-0 victory.
The one thing for sure from Eastleigh FC is the fact that you will see goals, though not sure which end at which they will be scored. On Tuesday at Welling the home side midfielder Lee Clarke stole the show with a four goal tally, this time the four goal show was replicated by the returning Jamie Slabber as he went on to tally up to twenty league goals so far this season.
Slabber was the only change to the side that had lost at Welling with Jamie Brown dropping to the bench and Ross Bottomley dropping from the squad. Brett Poate still injured. From the outset Eastleigh looked full of goals. In the opening two minutes Chris Holland saw a shot saved by home goalkeeper Louis Wells and Tom Jordan headed over when well placed then on six minutes Slabber saw a header from a Tony Taggart corner go just wide.
With seven minutes played an opening goal did arrive. Richard Graham’s free kick saw Slabber drift away from his defensive marker to place a header into the corner of the net. A half chance fell the way of Staines after eleven minutes though the turning Richard Orlu had no control on his shot and it went over the bar. Danny Smith saw a shot from a Warren Goodhind cross saved a minute later. The home side also saw an opportunist effort from long range by Scott Taylor saved by Jason Matthews.
When Staines visited Eastleigh earlier in the season, the visitors that day recorded a 4-1 victory, on nineteen minutes this time Eastleigh were the visitors and this time it was Eastleigh who scored their second goal which was edging Staines Town towards their worst ever Blue Square League defeat. Goodhind’s inch perfect ball into the path of Taggart allowed him to slip the ball to his left where Slabber again in acres of space just hammered a vicious drive into the roof of the net.
On thirty-four minutes Slabber completed his hat trick. Simon Jackson dragged Jordan to the ground following an excellent cross from Chris Holland and Slabber tucked away the awarded penalty kick with Wells going the wrong way. Eastleigh were in rampant mood. Two minutes following the penalty Shaun McAuley beat his full back then sent in a shot that dipped just over the bar.
Eastleigh did add a fourth three minutes before the interval. Taggart tantalised full back Rene Steer before firing across the face of the goal where Slabber applied the finishing touch at the far post. Taylor curled a shot just wide of the goal as the interval arrived.
The second half still saw chances though the game had been won. The home side saw efforts from Orlu and Taylor again both in the right areas but without troubling Matthews and on the hour Richard Butler missed the target from a good position. Taggart dispossessed Scarlett in a dangerous position on sixty-one minutes though his angled shot was just wide.
McAuley joined the scoring ranks on sixty-seven minutes. Anthony Riviere laid the ball out wide for McAuley who’s first touch took him past his defender then thundered a left foot drive from fully thirty-yards that gave Wells no chance.
Dominic Sterling headed a Steer corner wide after seventy minutes whilst a minute later Taggart sent in a shot from twenty-five yards that was also just wide. Steer was off target as the game started to reach its conclusion then in stoppage time Scarlett’s free kick gave a chance to Marc Charles-Smith but Matthews was at the substitutes feet to keep his clean sheet in tact for the afternoon.
