Baird's reaction - Eastleigh v Welling

Speaking to Radio Spitfire after this afternoon's 4-1 home defeat to Welling United, Eastleigh manager Ian Baird reflected on his disappointment: “Our first forty-five minutes performance was as bad as it has been since Staines last November.

“The goals we conceded were horrendous by anybody’s stretch of the imagination. The manner we conceded the goals today, they were horrendous, horrendous." Baird added.

“They (Welling) would have thought at half time they can’t believe it. That’s the most disappointing thing to me the goals we conceded.

“We came out second half we had a bit of a go, they scored a good goal through Jamie Day, but when you concede three goals like that it is nigh impossible to get back in the game, its massively disappointing.

“As I said to the players, the first half performance was disappointing, the score line 4-1 was disappointing and the manner of the first half performance was disappointing.

“It’s disappointing to lose three points but we’ve got ten games to go, we’ve got 30 points to play for and that is the most positive thing I can say about it," Baird continued.

In his words, the Eastleigh boss described the defending which triggered off the heavy defeat: "Giving a poor ball away in the middle of the pitch for them to go and break and score on you.

“The second goal where we don’t go and close down the man, let him travel forty/fifty yards into our own box, have a chance of clearing it and then don’t go and clear to gift them the second goal.

“The third goal was one of those football bloopers I would say."

With teams around the Spitfires winning this afternoon, Baird added: “We lost three points, we didn’t lose six we didn’t lose nine, we lost three. Make no mistake about it we’re massively disappointed."

Eastleigh have a clear week now to recoup ahead of next Saturday's visit to the Silverlake Stadium of Woking. Baird said: “We’ve got to fight, we’ve got to come back and we’ve got to come back with a bang."
