Basingstoke v Eastleigh - Match Preview

Match Preview by Kieran James
Ian Baird’s Spitfires will play in the Hampshire derby against Basingstoke Town this afternoon at the Camrose on the back of a strong Eastleigh side defeating Wessex Premier League outfit Romsey Town. The Spitfires won 3-2 on Tuesday night at the Silverlake Stadium in the Hants Senior Cup to book their place in the semi-final.

A goalless first half saw Eastleigh miss many chances with Richard Gillespie, who recently ended his one month loan spell at Bashley, denied a great chance on goal, however Romsey keeper Matt Brown did very well to keep it level after 45 minutes.

It took only two minutes after the break for Eastleigh to break the deadlock when Chris Flood fired home a volley to put Eastleigh on course for a semi-final tie.

Ian Baird made three second half substitutions when his side pulled ahead: Graeme Montgomery, Damian Scannell and Richard Gillespie all made way for Sam Wilson, Jamie Brown and Jordace Holder-Spooner.

Two minutes after the brave decisions of bringing off three of Eastleigh’s attacking force, Romsey equalised with Ryan Long firing home an equaliser much to the player's jubilation.

Things went bad to worse for the Spitfires when Jordace Holder-Spooner hopped off with a nasty looking injury which could keep him out for a few weeks.

Second half substitute Jamie Brown put Eastleigh in front again after 75 minutes with a side-footed effort that goalkeeper Brown could only get a touch to.

Thirteen minutes later Sam Wilson was through on goal only for Romsey to make a challenge on the seventeen-year-old striker, which keeper Matt Brown gathered up. Referee Ben Knight from Waterlooville gave a free-kick in the area for a pass back.

Centre back Mitchell Nelson received the ball from the free-kick and blasted home what turned out to be the winner before Ryan Long fired home a wonder goal for Romsey to end a thrilling 3-2 win for Eastleigh.

Basingstoke’s last game was in the FA Trophy second round against Blue Square Premier side Bath City. The Dragons put in a brave performance but Hereford United striker Sean Canham’s header was enough for Bath City to see off Frank Gray's side.

Basingstoke have only won one game in their last seven league games with their last victory away to Bromley where they won 1-3 courtesy of goals from Matt Warner, Wes Daly and a Bromley own goal.

Ninth-placed Basingstoke have won only four games at the Camrose in the league this season out of a possible twelve, securing 16 points out of a possible 36 at home this season.

The last time these two teams met was at the Silverlake Stadium and it was the first game of the 2011/2012 season that triggered a three game losing streak to Eastleigh’s poor start to this campaign.

Delano Sam-Yorke opened the scoring for the visitors after breaking into the 18-yard box and finishing with a powerful left footed drive that got past now Gloucester City goalkeeper Mike Green.

Sam-Yorke then got his second of the day and finished off the Spitfires after 28 minutes with a close range shot from a low driven cross.

That day was was one to forget for an Eastleigh side which only has six remaining players from the opening day of the campaign in today's squad.

The last time these two teams met at the Camrose, the Spitfires had a more successful day in the 2010/11 season. Jamie Slabber who will miss today's visit to Basingstoke with a cut shin, received a ball at a tight angle before last seasons top scorer curled a an stoppable shot past goalkeeper Simon Locke.

With seven minutes injury time being played in the first half, Anthony Riviere (now at Sutton United) received the ball from Shaun McAuley (who now plays for Basingstoke) and the midfielder drilled a shot past Locke that managed to somehow creep over the line to put Eastleigh 0-2 up.

Matt Warner gave the home side a glimmer of hope after an hour with his left foot drive, however the Eastleigh defence was good enough to seal Eastleigh the three points.

The Spitfires completed the signing of former Brighton & Hove Albion and rivals Havant and Waterlooville centre back Gary Elphick from fellow Blue Square Bet South side Eastbourne Borough last night.

This signing was followed with an announcement that Eastleigh are on the brink of signing another player.

Ali Fuseini who played for Eastleigh against Woking this season, has been released from prison for motoring offences, has signed for fellow Blue Square Bet South side Bromley.

In other news the long awaited match at the Silverlake Stadium which was called off on New Years day between Eastleigh and Havant and Waterlooville has been put forward to the 7th February.

COME ON YOU SPITFIRES!
