Eastleigh v Salisbury - Match Preview

By Kieran James
Ian Baird Spitfires made it one month and four days since they have scored a league goal on Saturday when they were slayed by Hampshire rivals Basingstoke Town in the Blue Square Bet South at The Camrose.

Eastleigh went into the game with new signing Gary Elphick on the bench as well as Graeme Montgomery who has started most games for Eastleigh this season.

The Spitfires were enjoying much of the possession in the first and were disappointed not to go in front however without last seasons top scorer Jamie Slabber, chances were narrowly missed or saved by Basingstoke keeper Ashley Bayes.

Fifteen minutes from time, Basingstoke’s second half pressure finally paid off with former Aldershot Town and Oxford United striker Tim Sills securing Basingstoke’s first double over Eastleigh in history with a powerful header from former Eastleigh player Shaun McAuley’s cross.

The Spitfires will look to forget Saturday’s performance with three points at The Silverlake Stadium tonight against 15th placed Salisbury City in the Blue Square Bet South (7:45pm kick off).

The Whites, who made the FA Cup third round this season and bowed out away to Sheffield United, in their last game played league leaders Woking at home at The Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

After Woking’s keeper Aaron Howe was sent off for bringing down former Eastleigh striker Robbie Matthews, it was clear sailing for the Wiltshire side. Goals from Robbie Matthews and Brian Dutton secured a famous three points for Salisbury against the league leaders who had only lost twice before in the league this season.

The last time these two teams played was at the Silverlake Stadium in a pre-season friendly. Shaun McAuley (now at Basingstoke) crossed from the right for Tony Taggart (now at Sutton United) to meet the ball with a gliding header, which proved to be the decisive goal in this match. Eastleigh player Chris Flood came off the bench for Salisbury in that particular game and Floody will be looking to face his former team tonight.

The last time these two teams played in a league game was at The Silverlake Stadium and The Whites claimed all three points on that occasion more than five years ago in the 2006/2007 season. In fact it has been just under seven years since Eastleigh beat Salisbury in a league game where they won 3-0 at home in the Ryman Premier League.

Salisbury City have only met Eastleigh twice in the Blue Square Bet South after getting promoted in the 2006/2007 season, however after spending two seasons in the top flight of non league, The Whites went into administration and got moved to the Southern Premier League, which they came third in and got promoted to the Blue Square Bet South again for this season.

Eastleigh will go into tonight’s game with an extra face in the squad. Former West Ham and Leyton Orient midfielder Daryl McMahon signed for The Spitfires yesterday much to the delight of manager Ian Baird who will is delighted with the addition to his squad.

Bradley Bubb, who is on loan from Aldershot Town, will be reunited with the McMahon, a midfield playmaker, after both playing key parts in Farnborough's runners-up campaign last season.

This is going to be a great game to watch so come on down to The Silverlake Stadium and roar on those Spitfires.

COME ON YOU SPITFIRES!
