Goodbye Gareth & Thankyou

Eastleigh Football Club would like to confirm that talented 30-year-old goalkeeper Gareth Barfoot has rejected our contract offer and has agreed to join Southern League Premier club, AFC Totton.

At this stage of his career the opportunity of first team football was the big attraction and he leaves with a big thank you and all of our best wishes.

Ian Baird said of the Southampton born shot-stopper: “The second half of last year Gareth was an understudy to Jack, which is difficult for anyone to take, but he was never content to just sit on the bench.

“This is a model professional who is great with the younger pro's and whilst I wanted to keep Gareth, I totally and utterly understand why he has chosen to move on – he has been an absolute pleasure to work with.”

Gareth started his footballing journey with Christchurch where he played for over five years. In February 2006 he signed for Gosport Borough FC before having three successful years at AFC Totton. After much speculation he would sign for Sholing, Gareth was given the opportunity to impress Eastleigh manager Ian Baird in a trial against Leyton Orient. Gareth grabbed that chance with both (gloved) hands and was rewarded with a contract at the Silverlake going on to make his league debut for the Spitfires in August 2010.

Gareth leaves with our thanks and our best wishes for the future. Good luck Gareth!
