Southam becomes a Spitfire
Eastleigh FC are thrilled to announce the signing of Glen Southam from Dover Athletic this morning as Ian Baird continues to put together his squad for the coming season.
Glen is an experienced and talented central midfielder with a wealth of Football League experience including spells at Dagenham and Barnet.
Ian is naturally delighted to have signed one of his key summer transfer targets. The Spitfire's manager commented: "Glen is a class midfielder, he has a great pedigree and I am really looking forward to working with him next season and beyond.
“He had a number of other offers but has chosen to join Eastleigh ahead of the other clubs and that is terrific news for us.
“I am sure he will be a real hit with the fans who will be delighted we have been able to attract a player of his calibre to the club."
31-year-old Southam began his career as a non-contract player at Fulham whilst also playing for Enfield. He signed for Bishop’s Stortford at the beginning of the 1999/2000 season going on to make over 100 appearances for the club, scoring 27 times. He also collected the Player of the Season award in 2000-01, 2002-03 and 2003-04 whilst with the the Bishops.
Glen signed for Dagenham and Redbridge in May 2004 for a then club record £20,000 fee and was an integral part of the side who won promotion to the Football League in 2007. Having made over 200 appearances for the Daggers, the summer of 2009 saw the midfielder agree to mutually terminate his contract at Victoria Road and signed for League Two’s Hereford United.
On deadline day of the January 2010 transfer window, he joined Conference National club Histon on an 18-month contract. However, amidst financial trouble, Southam agreed a mutual termination of his contract at Histon at the end of the 2009–10 season and soon joined Barnet. Glen spent two seasons at Underhill, playing 33 games for the Bees. In 2011 he joined Dover on a one year deal.
The midfielder is known to have a keen eye for goal and has been capped by England C 13 times between 2004 and 2007.
